Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.
I gave it all but you were never there,
I gave it all but did you ever really care?
I hope where you are is a home for you,
because I never found mine while I was always looking for you.

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.

Hey, live it up!

Where are you this time?
You never showed, you'll never know,
How could you just let me go?
I'm all alone but you can't feel that,
Look at me now, now I've become,
become the man you'll never know.

This is the anthem for all you cowards.
This is the anthem for all you cowards.
Cowards!

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.
I just don't see it eye to eye anymore,
You were too much for me to ignore.
This search has been full of so many tears,
That flooded the future I saw discovering you.

Hey Mister, where have you been?
I'll never get to live this life again.

Hey, live it up!

Where are you this time?
You never showed, you'll never know,
How could you just let me go?
I'm all alone but you can't feel that,
Look at me now, now I've become,
become the man you'll never know.

This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.
This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.
This is what I got,
I don't need you anymore.
This is what I got,
I don't need you.

    Song Meaning

This song is actually about growing up without a father or a father figure.

    My Interpretation

These lyrics are clearly expressing an atheist view of giving it all and getting nothing in return. MMI isn't a christian band as Benton stated in an interview and that only strenghten my thought.

    My Opinion

What i like about this song is that it could be an ambiguous message, it could be for a father who abandon someone, or if you twist a little the words, event the phrase "how could you just let me go" could be for someone who left you, or talking about god for a more twisted interpretation

    General Comment

“Out of all the songs on the record, this was the hardest to spit out. To write a song about how my father was never there has always been bottled up, and to put it on a track took a lot out of me. But it needed to be written and I would never change it.” -rocksound.tv/features/read/track-by-track-miss-may-i-at-heart

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
