I know what I must do
I know what I must do
I'm coming home
Fixed socket threat
Binocular vision
I see all
I hear all
Superior intellect
I'm the night owl
Built by the alien Gods
I'm the night owl
A necessity to the existence of all life
I'm the night owl
I'm the night owl
Fixed socket threat
Binocular vision
I see all
I see all
I hear all
I'm the night owl
I'm the night owl
I return in the day but you won't ever see me
Only my eyes
The blaring, yellow sphere
A sharp distortion
The TV screen you stare at night after night
Over and over
Over and over
I return in the day but you won't ever see me
Only my eyes
The blaring, yellow sphere
A sharp distortion
The TV screen you stare at night after night
Over and over
Over and over
You are staring into me
Cut the wires and cut your ties
You aren't what you think
An experiment
They will send us to warn, but that's part of the game as well
Fucking weaklings
I still know what my mind tells you to do
Cut out pieces to form new
I still know what my mind tells you to do
Cut out pieces to form new
Am I me?
What is he?
Am I me?
What is he?
It's come to the point of opening the box
Carved in the side are the words:
Property of the Night Owls
Smash to unlock the desperate measures

Am I me?
What is he?
Am I me?
What is he?
He is found and I will drag him to his end
It's not selfish if it's what's right
He knows I'm looking for him
This thievery is for the bettering of all humankind
So it seems
Creep in before the rise of the sun
They are sleeping
Holding each other like it's the last...
And it is
Open the valve
Fill the room
And it is
Open the valve
Say goodbye to everything
Creep in before the rise of the sun
They are sleeping
Holding each other like it's the last...
Creep in before the rise of the sun
They are sleeping
Holding each other like it's the last...
And it is
Open the valve
Fill the room
And it is
Open the valve
Fill the room
Am I me?
Am I me?
Seek the day
Never again
Seek the day
Never again
Seek the day
Never again
Seek the day
Weightless in the sea, sea of space
Never again
Seek the day
Weightless in the sea, sea of space
Never again
Never again
Eyes open to the sound of laughter
Like a mighty God casting his spells on the worlds below
The man is me
Jet propulsion disengage
Dancing towards our future
A future of nothing
A future towards nothing
Jet propulsion disengage
Dancing towards our future
A future of nothing
A future towards nothing
Jet propulsion disengage
Dancing towards our future
A future of nothing
A future towards nothing
Jet propulsion disengage
Dancing towards our future
A future of nothing
A future towards nothing
Jet propulsion disengage
Dancing towards our future
A future of nothing
A future towards nothing
Goodbye to everything
Goodbye to everything

I just want to get the ball rolling on this song.

    First:

Strigiformes is the Order in which owls (Family) fall under when you talk about them in a scientific, taxonomic rank way. So I think Strigformes is like a collective mind of Night Owls. Similar to the demon, Legion, from the bible. "

And He (Jesus) asked him (the man), "What is thy name?" And he answered, saying, "My name is Legion: for we are many.") Mark 5:9

    Any thoughts?

    Second:

    The line:

"They will send us to warn, but that's part of the game as well"

makes me wonder who THEY are. Who is controlling the Night Owls?

    Third:

    The lines:

I still know what my mind tells you to do Cut out pieces to form new

The word "still" implies that he knows what to do despite something that could stop him, whether that thing be time or brain washing or something. Also, his mind is telling someone else to do something, whose mind is that?

    Lastly

    The lines:

Am I me What is he

Does anyone else hear it more like:

Am I HE (me) What is he

    or is it just me?

Still trying to make out the rest of this song. Basically it sounds like the story here is:

    1. Prospect #2 knows he must destroy the world (desperate measures. The box is a doom's day device created by the night owls)
    2. The night owls are a collective mind, who can proccess incredible amounts of information from several sources at once.
    3. Prospect #2 destroys the night owls 4.Prospect #1 awakes as the world is ending. He basically watches himself destroy everything.

Please help me make more sense of all this. Thanks ya'll

    My Interpretation

I feel like their should be another little ep explaining the history of the night owls, or maybe just a song. the whole concept is very interesting…

I am a rookie at this so this is definitely not spot on, just what I think…

It seems this is the final sort of "faceoff" between Prospect 2 and the Strigiformes. The head honcho (or maybe the collective of all of the owls as explained by BTDan) is explaining to Prospect 2 that this whole thing the two main characters went through was just a little experiment by them, that they were just lab rats to these higher being's plan (belittling them even more by describing them as "fucking weaklings").

I believe that the Strigiformes had told Prospect 2 to cut his skin off in Lay Your Ghosts to Rest (I still know what my mind tells you to do, Cut out pieces to form new). At this point the Prospect begins to rethink what/who he is (am I me, who is he, blah blah blah), not with respect to Prospect 1 but believing himself to have been a pawn in the Night Owls' experiment.

There's a box. As explained by other interpretations from other people on other songs, a "box" seems to symbolize a world or planet in the story, the Black Box being prospect 2's home after being destroyed (or before, not totally sure). The box mentioned here is Prospect 1's world. The Strigiformes are in higher power above this box, seeing as it is property of theirs.

this next part I'm kind of jaded on. I feel like Prospect 2 is now looking in the box, sort of monitoring Prospect 1's world like a god, searching for him. On the other hand, maybe he isn't actually "found" in a literal sense, Prospect 2 just knows that 1 is in the world. He says that the destruction of this world is for the best, but still I don't know why it's for the best. Maybe he is feeling vengeful because of the destruction of his own world, or maybe there is some legitimate reason I am missing.

It's nighttime. Everyone in prospect 1's world is sleeping and prospect 2 creeps in and "opens the valve"…

Right here I feel like this box is actually a ship, which would make sense in context of the last stanza with the whole jet propulsion disengage thing. BUT how would he have gotten onto said ship? like I said I'm still uncertain about this part.

Regardless, It's obvious that prospect 2 has decided to keep playing along with the strigiformes and destroys this…place like they wanted him to all along.

the part where Prospect 1 awakens is easier to interpret. when he wakes up from his sleep he hears laughter from this godlike being that is him. well it's not really him, but Prospect 2. this makes me think that prospect 2 had absolutely no remorse for destroying a whole civilization, completely succumbing to the rule of the Strigiformes, and possibly even becoming one of them. maybe this story was just an initiation for prospect 2 becoming one of these night owls?

In Melting City, there's a new entity called The Black Mask. this may be the thing that had destroyed prospect 2's planet, describing how he had felt like a robot doing the bidding of, supposedly, The Night Owl's. This gets me thinking, is there an endless cycle of these night owls destroying worlds at the hands of other beings? will there be someone who escapes the destruction of Prospect 1's world and starts the cycle all over again? or am I completely wrong and maybe Prospect 2 did end up ending the Strigiformes reign of terror?

this is just a clusterfuck of everything that's been running through my head after listening to this amazing album for a couple weeks. I would go on about other stuff from other songs but I don't feel like typing anymore and I have to piss.

    don't hate

What about Prospect 1 had Prospect 2's letter because he was actually the one who stole the letter from P2's wife ? That's maybe why, because of remorse, he tried to Swim to the Moon to leave this world behind ?

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Cajun Girl
Little Feat
Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
