All dressed up and nowhere to go
Walking the streets all alone
Another night to wish that you could forget
Making yourself up as you go along

Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home?
Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home?
Does God bless your transsexual heart?
True trans soul rebel

Yet to be born, you're already dead
You sleep with a gun beside you in bed
Follow it through to the obvious end
Slit your veins wide open, you bleed it out

Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home?
Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home?
Does God bless your transsexual heart?
True trans soul rebel

You should have been a mother
You should have been a wife
You should have been gone from here years ago
You should be living a different life

Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home?
Who's gonna take you home tonight?
Who's gonna take you home? Who's gonna take you home tonight? Who's gonna take you home?
Does God bless your transsexual heart?

This song can never ever get old... Seriously, it can't, unless I am unable to find them in my desperate and exhausting search, its only one of two (transgender dysphoria blues being number two) explicitly trans songs from even remotely mainstream that we trans can take some refuge in.

Laura's pain comes through so clearly in this song, and it's making me cry at the office. Oh goodness, this makes me think of some of the most horrible lows in my life and transition, and it's so sad.

Laura Jane is a true trans soul rebel... what Against Me! has created over the course their career is very special, put all their albums together and you have an epic story of turmoil, regret, alienation, redemption... all through outsider perspective... who's more of an outsider than a street punk kid from Florida?... and this record may be the crown jewel of their career. In addition to being another great chapter added to the story, it's a mark in history regarding acceptance of modernized gender identity and expression in modern society. Pinhead Gunpowder had a guitar player years ago who later came out as trans, but unfortunately she died of a genetic disease before making a mark. Laura Jane stands relatively alone in the rock community as a trans person, and... take what I say with a grain of salt, because I'm a cis white male... she's probably a hell of a damn great representative. Chuck Ragan is often thought of as the East Coast's resident badass punk rocker, but despite all the fish he's caught and houses he's built over the years, nobody approaches the level of badass that Laura Jane has shown the world... not just in recent times in the face of transitioning, but all her life. My admiration for Laura Jane, and for the rest of this band, is immeasurable.

The catchy upbeat music makes these lyrics particularly empowering... Laura Jane Grace is my fucking hero.

I get the true-trans (Laura is transgender) and the rebel (punk rock) but what is the soul ?

It's okay as a song but it really bugs me that she doesn't seem to even bother to try to sing at a higher pitch. If you're a professional musician who take pride in your craft, you should put some effort into it. This just sounds like a man singing. Then again, punk has always disrespected virtuosity.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it. “I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.

Shudder to Think
This song is timeless, and nearly 20 years after its creation, still possesses the mystique it did the first time i heard it ~1994. To me, at first blush, all those years ago, it had some kind of homo-erotic allure. The line "so that the others may do" tells of something which must be done for others to follow suit. It felt like like some kind of roxy-glam-pop invitation to sexual liberation. Upon further introspection I think the song may not have an intrinsic meaning, but simply represents a sort of "holding open the door" for people who otherwise might be affronted by this song/band's unusual style. I know, as a sort of armchair rock-historian, that there have been few bands so daring and so true to the sound that wanted to emerge from within, whether the creator wanted it or not. This band handled it with elegance and grace seldom, if ever, seen.
