Brittney said wait, I don't understand
Could you, would you explain it again-a-an
This new idea of ours is really causin' a fuss
It's got everyone sayin' "Oh, what's the matter with us"
Oh what's the matter, what, oh what's the matter

I like, I like when we whisper soft to each other
I like, I like when we’re quiet with one another

What's the matter with them
Talkin', talkin', tellin' all their frie-eh-ends
It's good in theory, but will it work in the end
Oh, oh, no, I don't think so
Who would risk it
Oh, what's the matter with us,
Oh what's the matter, what oh what's the matter

I like, I like when we’re na-ice, nice to each other
I like, I like when we surely like one another

What's the matter with them
What's the matter with them

I like, I like when we whisper soft to each other
I like, I like when we’re quiet with one another
I like, I like when we’re na-ice, nice to each other
I like, I like when we surely like one another

    My Interpretation

I could see this either being about friendship or a romantic relationship. If it's about a romance, it's celebrating small, sweet moments of a couple that has secluded itself. If it's about friendship, I'd say it's suggesting people should be nicer to each other. Girls are notoriously vicious to each other, and Brittany represents someone like that; she so used to that "cliquey" lifestyle that she can't understand what being genuinely nice to someone is like or how it feels to receive that kind of kindness.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
