Clear Skies Lyrics
Over the downtowns and the avenues
Where the streets are wide and the people thrive
And it's further to fall down because you fly so high
I've never seen such clear skies
I've never seen high hopes
I've never seen such tired eyes
Everything you are, everything you are
Turns on the TV as the levee breaks
Where the streets are burned by the summer sun
And there's nowhere to run to when your time has come
I've never seen such clear skies
I've never seen high hopes
I've never seen such tired eyes
Felt life washing over me
I took my pills and I went to sleep
Oh, I sang myself to sleep
Everything you are, everything you are
And I wish that I could see
The world the way you do, as selfishly as you
Everything you are, everything you are
And I wish that I could state
My faith the way you do, as certainly as you

This song is so beautiful, I'm dissapointed it has only three comments. When I heAr it, I think it's about becoming ensnared in the beauty of a city, and the fast paced excitement of life in one. The lines "and it's further to fall down, 'cause you fly so high" are referring to how glamorous and exciting everything seems, and how high people in the city appear to live, but how that can shatter in an instant, and come crashing down around them. "I've never seen such high hopes/tired eyes" supports this as well, because I see it as people in the city having big dreams, and working hard to attain them, often with little success, making them tired and embittered. "Clear skies gonna fall on you" is the dream inevitably falling apart, and crashing down on the person. Just my rough interpretation, I'm not very good at putting my thoughts into words.

Love this song. I don't know if this is correct, but this is what I think the song means. It is about the American dream and how America is the land of opportunity. Behind the dream there is always a nightmare, in this song's case the clear skies is the dream, but there is always a storm ready to strike and ruin the dream.
Comment if I'm incorrect.
I think NimEdelweiss is closer to the truth. Whilst I think you've kind of got the right idea, I doubt it's about the American dream, seeing as Keane are an English band.

This is spot on, but this song also has an iron, caustic quality to the commentary on the American Dream. Truth told, i don't think the Keane boys are very fond of the American "culture". I wonder if they actual cash the checks we send them made from all of our pathetic striving for that American Dream they "cleverly" insult.

I really like the vocals in this one. I don't know, something about this song (maybe just because it's Keane) makes me really like it.
And any reason why "Skies" couldn't be correctly spelled in the title?

I just noticed a couple of the mistakes in this one. Here are the right parts, according to Keane's new digital lyric booklet (it's a neat little thing):
High on the bell tower I took my view Over the downtowns and the avenues Where the streets are wide and the people thrive And it's further to fall down because you fly so high
I've never seen such beauty I've never seen such clear skies I've never seen high hopes I've never seen such tired eyes
And I wish that I could be Everything you are, everything you are
Down in the delta the city wakes Turns on the TV as the levee breaks Where the streets are burned by the summer sun And there's nowhere to run to when your time has come
I've never seen such beauty I've never seen such clear skies I've never seen high hopes I've never seen such tired eyes
Pulled the roots up piece by piece Felt life washing over me I took my pills and went to sleep Oh, I sang myself to sleep
And I wish that I could be Everything you are, everything you are And I wish that I could see The world the way you do, as selfishly as you
And I wish that I could be Everything you are, everything you are And I wish that I could state My faith the way you do, as certainly as you

The lyrics here need editing.
"Take my pills on a winter sleep I send myself to sleep"
I believe should read
"Took my pills and I went to sleep I sang myself to sleep"
and
"And I wish that I could stay My faith you way you do"
sounds like it should be "And I wish that I could STAKE my faith the way you do"
Either way, this song is beautiful. I've wanted to live in a very big city my whole life and have had to stay contented with living a ways out of one, up until now. I'm planning on going away to university in one of the biggest next year, and I think I've heard few other songs that have managed to capture the gorgeously risky feeling of being in such a big and difficult place.

Hi everyone! Sometimes Keane's lyrics are kind of encrypted. This is one, at least for me... As a fan, I know they love visiting new places, they love traveling and sightseeing, but at the same time they are constantly moving from one place to another so sometimes they don't have time to finish enjoying a place because suddenly they see another sight. I think that's the song about. The sensation of going from one place to another and get amazed by the sights you see when you visit new places, and maybe it reflects a little the desire of belonging to that place and also how people do not appreciate where they are.
On the other hand, I do agree with NimEdelweisson's comment, it's a great interpretation and maybe much better than mine :P
