You got your tongue peirced once
And you say you've got another
That you can't show anyone unless it's undercovers
But you're running all around
Showing everyone your new tattoo

You got an A in class
And you hope no one would notice
You're the smartest kid in school
And it makes you self-conscious
And your loser boyfriend's smoking out in the boys' room
I wish somone would tell you

(chorus)
You're a star the way you are
You know you're not fooling anyone
No you've got the eyes of an angel
Don't try to change, yeah
Everybody's got their scars
(Everybody's got their scars)
No matter what they tell ya
You're beautiful the way you are

And your mama's so happy
You became a cheerleader
Homecoming queen just like your older sister
'Til you died your hair pink an'
They said what where you drinkin'
And it never did sink in
It don't matter what they think 'cuz

(chorus)
You're a star the way you are
You know you're not fooling anyone
No you've got the eyes of an angel
Don't try to change, yeah
Everybody's got their scars
(Everybody's got their scars)
Never mind how ugly they are
No matter what they tell ya
You're beautiful the way you are

Oh the way you are
(oh the way you are)
Oh the way you are
(oh the way you are)
Oh the way you are
(oh the way you are) yeah

(chorus)
You're a star the way you are
You know you're not fooling anyone
No you've got the eyes of an angel
Don't try to change, yeah
Everybody's got their scars
(Everybody's got their scars)
No matter what they tell ya
You're beautiful the way you are
x2

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
