The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
You used to fly low
But now you're flying high
But what goes up must come down
That's why I'm leaving this old town
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
You know me, me no good in your heart
That's why I'm singing this song
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
You don't want me around
That's why I'm leaving this old town
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
So long, so long baby, baby I must go
You know you told me, you don't want me, anymore
You told me to pack my clothes
You told me to hit the road
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
But now you're flying high
But what goes up must come down
That's why I'm leaving this old town
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
You know me, me no good in your heart
That's why I'm singing this song
Bye, bye, baby bye bye
You don't want me around
That's why I'm leaving this old town
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
So long, so long baby, baby I must go
You know you told me, you don't want me, anymore
You told me to pack my clothes
You told me to hit the road
So bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
Bye bye, bye baby, baby bye bye
