Got a surprise from my honey
Got a message from my girl
When she picked up her pen from beside her bed
And wrote me a scribbled note
Said she'd be comin' back to see me
She would be visiting real soon
Gonna get up from her lone white bed
And leave this cold white room

wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooh

We would once more live together
Go out on a lovin' spree
Just like before the accident
My baby would look at me
I saw her sweet face tremblin'
As she tried to open her eyes
I jumped with the joy of a grateful little boy
The day my baby gave me a surprise

wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooh

Got a surprise from my honey
Got a message from my girl
When she picked up her pen from beside her bed
And wrote me a scribbled note
I saw her sweet face tremblin'
As she tried to open her eyes
I jumped with the joy of a grateful little boy
The day my baby gave me a surprise

wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooooh
wah-oooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo-ooh

This song is either about a baby being born because of an "accident", or a car crash. I really enjoy ambiguous songs.

I think this song references "St. James Infirmary Blues": I went down to the St. James infirmary, I saw my baby there She was stretched out on a long white table, so cold, and fine, and fair. It seems to me that the song is about a girlfriend in a coma (OK, or a similarly serious condition) who's started to wake up. If you look at the lyrics in that mindset, it's actually kind of sweet - the narrator jumps with joy when he sees his "baby" is starting to recover.

My first impression matched Dubios Merit's: That the baby in question was in an "accident" that left her incapacitated, but is coming round, enough to write a note and "get up" after recovery. Sweet, indeed! Thanks for the reference that pretty much confirms the source! Either that, or amazing coincidence. (goes off to Google "Saint James Infirmary Blues")... -Phase

that's pretty interesting, but just because a track alludes to another song doesn't mean it's about the same thing. DEVO's clever like that and the lyrics are supposed to be ambiguous.

The accident was the unplanned pregnancy and they fought about it she left called and said she was keeping it... He was happy to be a dad and that she was coming back to him. Classic Markie celebrating a child in the form of a song for his "baby".

Cutest Devo song. And the lyrics turned out not to be so careless as I used to think.

    My Interpretation
I though it was about a man abusing his girlfriend/ wife.
