General CommentThis whole album is a breakup album - some songs sad, some angry. I think this one is a bit more reflective, but also angry. The girl he was with has left him, and is out partying ("your party dress is such a mess"), traveling ("you wake around in other towns") and having fun without him. They had been together with the idea of growing old together, marriage, kids, whatever...."the dream you sold me," and she changed her mind. "You don't know what you want"...and there is a danger in not knowing what you want because you are kind of floundering..

In a way the sentiment reminds me of "Wild World" by Cat Stevens - singing a warning song to a young woman about how the world may seem to smile upon you now, but watch out: your enemies will laugh and watch you fall. The warning is partially true, but coming from a jaded man who is heartbroken and using a lecture to try and rationalize his pain.

My InterpretationIn regards to the title "nova baby", I think that there is a possibility that it could be a reference to actual novae. Novae are dwarf stars that leach hydrogen and shit off of a companion star, resulting in an explosion and brightening of the dwarf star. This could be a metaphor translating to the girl the song is about leaching fame, money, acknowledgement, or whatever it is from Dan. And by dollar machine he means she's cashing in on this so most likely it's money and material goods. I could be totally off, but I just thought I'd share anyways. Essentially, she's thrown away all her dreams so she could live off of Dan and have the luxuries associated with a successful musician, deciding that the money is worth it whether or not she felt anything substantial for him, and she became exactly what she said she never would. So yeah sounds like a bitch. Tell me what you think, I've been dying to discuss this.

General CommentThis song became one of my instant favorites...I think it just says that enemies/critics will always be there to shape someone's perspective of what they want even though they never fully understand what exactly they want.

General CommentI really am diggin this song. I love and enjoy the album, but because i've noticed it, this song is what i'm feeling at the moment. You can't be sure what they were meaning or thinking about while writing this song... but here's what I think about it lol. It's like a relationship with two people who are distant and disconnected. (possibly already separated, or maybe not. whatever the case...) Maybe 'his' partner isn't ''doing what's right'', ''making the right choices'', doing things that are affecting them both and making hurtful mistakes. Maybe the parter is living a frivolous life, being associated with 'bad' people and bad things, disguised as friendly, good and important. When really these 'bad' people might be their downfall in some way. - ''All your enemies smile when you fall''. This person takes it cause they ''don't know what they want,''. Don't know how to accept what's good or bad. And also take 'it', while taking for granted the person waiting on them. Hurting and wasting the time of the one that loves them, maybe dragging them along or using them in some way - "All this love of mine, all my precious time''.

I really haven't understood yet what lines like ''taking nova baby to the dollar machine'' or ''there go the kids, the have-nots, elevater ladies in the parking lots'' mean, but lines like the first verse, and ''that party dress is such a mess'', ''you saw it all and I recall the dream you told me'', have personal meanings for me. That I could explain but won't. I suppose the easiest way I see it is, that this song is about a person waiting and waiting then eventually getting fed up with waiting on a person who doesn't know what they're doing with their life, love, emotions, and actions and what they want out of it. I assume in the context of the song - love, a strong/true 'relationship', sacrifice, and some worth-while-ness. ''You'll need me one day, need me one day soon.''
