We're in the dark it's getting late
I really should go he's waiting for me
We both know it's not what it seems
We both know what's between the sheets

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
And I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

What will they say
What would they do
Would it be trouble if they knew

I'm trying hard to make you see
All that you are
Is all that I need

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

Let it out (x6)

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

I know that it's a secret
And that I gotta keep it
But I want the lights on
Yeah I want the lights on
I don't want to run away anymore
Leave the lights on (x3)

Maybe the song is written from the perspective of a person in a lesbian relationship; she's willing to come out, but her girlfriend isn't. The speaker is torn; she doesn't want to hide anymore, but she knows that doing so would hurt her girlfriend.

I am pretty sure that this is about an affair. It is addressed to the person she is having an affair with. Her boyfriend/fiance/husband is waiting for her ("I really should go he's waiting for me"), but she is with someone else, who she is actually in love with ("I'm trying hard to make you see/All that you are/Is all that I need."). She knows that she can't tell anyone ("I know that it's a secret / And that I gotta keep it"). Everyone else thinks that the nature of her relationship with this person is platonic ("We both know it's not what it seems / We both know what's between the sheets") She knows it will cause all kinds of hurt and problems for people she is close to ("What will they say / What would they do / Would it be trouble if they knew").

I believe that this song is about a woman who is in a relationship with another woman, but doesn't want to come out. She's in an affair with the man she's dating, and wants to come out, but the other woman doesn't want to, so she's torn. She's also afraid that people might judge her and outcast her if they find out.

Definitely all about sex. I'm bouncing between thinking it's her first time or if she's just cheating on someone? Not sure 100% but that's what I was thinking.

This song says to me that she's having a relationship with someone, and they can't really disclose their status. So I think the girl cares so much for this guy, that she wants to tell the world.

This song is about a girl having an affair with someone else. It's a secret, and she has to keep it. BUT, she wants things to come to light, maybe the guilt is too much, or she wants to be honest with her man. who knows. "I really should go he's waiting for me"

I think we can all agree this is about a transvestite... They both know it's not what it seems... They both know what's between the sheets... She has a secret, but she's gotta keep it But she wants the lights on She doesn't wanna run away anymore What will they say...? What will they do...? Would it be trouble if they knew...? (probably) Let it out. x6. (she can't take it, she's gonna just let it all out)

    Song Meaning
youtube.com/… The light is a representation of his power over her. Every time he touches her (or something of hers) the light goes off, meaning that he is in power and in control of the situation (the light). She is pissy because she wants the lights on, she wants to expose the secret relationship. At the end the light transfers over to him, thus making it his burden now (she leaves him).

for me this seems like someone want to tell the world everything but cant manage to because the person is supressed by something. a trauma or something. the reason i say this is i feel like i trap myself inside and cant get anything out. i want to show the world my real feelings so they can understand me.

The way I hear the song, it sounds like one of two similar situations. (1) she is having an affair with her boyfriend's best friend or brother (2) they are both married and having an affair -- either way she is tired of the lie and ready to expose the secret or leave him. In the end she seemingly does leave him thus removing his choice/need for them to meet in a veil of secrecy and lies.

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

Matt Shadows their lead singer says the song was written as per request from the developers of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. Watching the initial trailers for the game & looking at production sketches reminded him of the 'S-Town' podcast & its main protagonist, John B. McLemore. Matt also comments specifically on the lyrics: "I decided that the lyrics would shadow McLemore's life." In 2012, antiquarian horologist John B. McLemore sent an email to the staff of the show 'This American Life' asking them to investigate an alleged murder in his hometown of Woodstock, Alabama, a place McLemore claimed to despise. After a year of exchanging emails & several months of conversation with McLemore, producer Brian Reed traveled to Woodstock to investigate. Reed investigated the crime & eventually found that no such murder took place, though he struck up a friendship with the depressed but colorful character of McLemore. He recorded conversations with McLemore & other people in Woodstock. McLemore killed himself by drinking potassium cyanide on June 22, 2015 while the podcast was still in production. In the narrative of the podcast, this occurs at the end of the second episode; subsequent episodes deal with the fallout from McLemore's death while exploring more of McLemore's life & character.
