I'm burned out like a bright light, I wasn't ready for this.
You're adorable as hell, but I'm glancing at your wrist.
Oh please have faith, I can be so cavalier.
And when they start to ask questions I'll make sure to be clear.

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me.
Tell them what you think about the way you handled everything.
You turned and all you left me with was this broken key.
So tell me what you think.

Give it up for the long nights and all those terrible fights.
Were you honest with yourself, every version of yourself?
Did you get lost on the side of the road?
If you keep acting this way I swear I'll never come home.

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me.
Tell them what you think about the way you handled everything.
We walk alone on this broken road for eternity.
So give me company and help me sing this lonely melody.
You turned and all you left me with was this broken key.
So tell me what you think.

Sign me up, no regrets.
Make a man out of me.
And I won't say a word
And I'll give all the things that you want
And I need just to give me some peace.
At the bottom of the ocean, there's a place for you and me.

Lead the way, straight ahead.
You gave me the time of my life and cut like a knife to the bone.

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me.
And tell them what you think about the way you handled everything.
So neat and clean.
Well, the world is full of such pretty things.
So do your best for me.

    My Opinion

I'm burned out like a bright light, I wasn't ready for this. (he wasn't prepared for the ended relationship to end up the way it did)

You're adorable as hell, but I'm glancing at your wrist. (she cuts)

Oh please have faith, I can be so cavalier. (he wants her to believe they will be together again, but not now...AKA he is glad its over...for the moment)

And when they start to ask questions I'll make sure to be clear. (when everyone asks questions about their breakup he will make sure to say that it was his fault its over but not his fault it ended the way it did)

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me. (she stole his friends for herself)

Tell them what you think about the way you handled everything. (she will gossip about him to them and they wont defend him)

You turned and all you left me with was this broken key. (she left him with nothing but the "broken key to her heart")

So tell me what you think. (What the line says)

Give it up for the long nights and all those terrible fights. ("THANK GOD ITS OVER!")

Were you honest with yourself, every version of yourself? (she has so many personalities and she lies to him every time she changes)

Did you get lost on the side of the road? (an insult to call her out on her stupidity)

If you keep acting this way I swear I'll never come home. (she is being a jerk and let the side of her come out that hadn't before)

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me. Tell them what you think about the way you handled everything. We walk alone on this broken road for eternity. (Everyone ends up alone in the end)

So give me company and help me sing this lonely melody. (she pretended to be there but actually wasnt)

You turned and all you left me with was this broken key. So tell me what you think.

Sign me up, no regrets. (he doesnt regret the end of the relationship)

Make a man out of me. And I won't say a word And I'll give all the things that you want (he doesnt care about anyone or thing anymore he just doesnt care)

And I need just to give me some peace. (he needs some closure)

At the bottom of the ocean, there's a place for you and me. (figurative language for "our relationship is dead")

Lead the way, straight ahead. (Telling her to lead the way..duh lol) You gave me the time of my life and cut like a knife to the bone. (she was nice until it was over then she turned out to not be what he thought)

When you see my friends, tell them hi for me. And tell them what you think about the way you handled everything. So neat and clean. Well, the world is full of such pretty things. (he is starting to see he never needed her)

So do your best for me.

    Song Meaning

I think its about a guy in a relationship with a girl who self harms and the conversation that goes on between them.

in the first verse, he realizes that she self harms. he wants her to have faith in him and trust him that he won't get things confused when he has to explain whats going on to other people.

in the chorus, I think the lyrics are coming from the girl's point of view. she doesn't go out because of her self harm issues. she's asking him to tell them about how he kept his composure through the situation. for the last 2 lines, I'm not sure. I think he was shocked when she told him, and his response was to shut her out for a little bit to find his thoughts. therefore, closing his heart. when she tried to open it with the key, she ended up breaking it. instead of being inside his heart to find the answer, she has to outright ask him.

the second verse is pretty obvious. they've had somewhat of a rough past because she was hiding a very big part of herself and got lost trying to keep the other part alive. he threatens to leave her completely if she isn't honest with him.

in the new parts of the chorus, she's talking about how she's forever changed by what she's done to herself, and she can't undo any of it. she's asking that he stays so she doesn't have to go through it alone, even though the situation is purely self inflicted.

in the last verse, he's asking her to be honest and tell him about all the horrible things in life. he's thinking that once he knows these things, it will make him a man because he handled them so effortlessly. when he's seen the hardships, he'll try his best to make things better and give her what she needs to make it through another day. he'll have a peace of mind once he knows that he's helping her, and their relationship will last forever, going where all things end up, at the bottom of the ocean, together. he's asking her to lead the way, and show him all of the details. he's learning new things in his life and the last part is a bit of irony.

the last part of the song is from her point of view again. she's saying how the world has pretty things, and asking him that he still stays his neat and clean self, and tries to be beautiful as he always has been, even though he's discovered a darker part of their world.

So basically this song is about Derek's relationship, where he talked about it during an interview and played it on acoustic. He said he went through a complicated relationship and says there was a lot of things going on.

As an overall, this song is basically about the relationship between a guy and a girl who self harms. The verse is from the guys perspective or dialog while the chorus is the girl's. So it's like a conversation between them.

Verse 1: At one point of the relationship, the guy was shocked about the girl's secret, where she harm herself. He tries to convince her to trust him and say that he'll be clear to answer people regarding this issue, where 'they' is referred to the girl's friends.

Chorus 1: Shes asking him to send her regards to her friends because shes afraid of what theyll think about her once the guy tells them about the issues that shes facing with and how he deals with it. The last two lines of the chorus just show how the guy deals with it, which is walking away since he was shocked about it, because he cannot think clearly. She asks him what he thinks about all of this.

Verse 2: He was furious about it. The have had rough pass with fights and all regarding other things, while the main issue now is more important when compared to the other ones. He ask her was she honest with herself, since she always change the issues just so that he wouldnt find out the big part of herself that shes hiding. He threatens her that if she continue to lie to him, he'll never come back to her.

Chorus 2: (some might think that it is the same as the first one, but its not. because this is her respond to the guy's second part-verse 2.) she ask him to tell her friends how he handle it this time. she knows that this relationship wont go anywhere because she cant see him in her life anymore by what she did.

Verse 3: He's beginning to accept her and all of her secrets. He said he'll do it and he wont have any regrets about it. He wants her to tell him all her dark side so he will man up and tries his best not to say a word about it or judge her. He'll do anything for her, giving all of what she wants, because this will make her stay with him because he needs her in his life and he'll be happy about it. He says that he'll be with her until the end (at the bottom of the ocean). Hes asking her to lead the way, as in showing him all her details. He says he'll be very happy, even though it will hurt him.

Chorus 3: She knows that they carry on with this relationship, he will eventually be hurt by it even though he says he'll be happy. (from the last line of verse 3 - and it cut like a knife to the bone) So the last chorus, she ask him to tell her friends how he handled it this time. The second part of the chorus is changed to 'so neat and clean...' and not 'you turned and all...' meaning that shes not angry or sad about it anymore since she know shes the reason why he got hurt in the first place. Shes acknowledge that the world has pretty things, meaning that the guy is kind to her and has always been there for her, and advise him not to the same mistake as she did. But she knows that they live in two different world, and cant be together. So shes letting him go and accepting it. And from the music, it slowed down, somewhat indicating that she has accepted everything and letting him go

I think this song is about being on the road and breaking up with someone who's still back home. That's what it sounds like to me, anyway.

Can't wait for the new album!

I like this line "You're adorable as hell, but I'm glancing at your wrist." buttttt i dont really understand how that ties in with the rest of the song, which i think is pretty much about a bad breakup, like she didnt handle it very well and things turned ugly?

    My Interpretation

I think this song is about him being on the road and having problems with his girlfriend. And the girl is acting differently and neither of them want to deal with it anymore and he realizes that it's time for them be done, hence " i just need to give me some peace/ at the bottom of the ocean theres a place for you and me."

    and yeah. it's pretty platonic.

i think it's about it's a girl who's transfered into someone very fake, but he's afraid to leave her because of her intense depression; yet he has to leave her, because he doesn't know her anymore.

I love this song, i think that it seems like a song about a girl that has been changing and the relationship isnt going where the guy expected it to. maybe she handled the relationship or breakup in a bad way? "when you see my friends, tell them hi for me, tell them what you think about the way you handled everything" in terms of the chorus i also think th a bad that maybe he used to be in a bad group of friends that he introduced her to and she has fallen in with them. the only part of the song that i dont get is "Sign me up, no regrets. Make a man out of me." it sounds to me like he is enlisting in the army but i dont really see how that ties in with the rest of song.. oh well, i would love to hear other peoples opinions (:

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
