"The Devil's Orchard" as written by and Mikael Lars Akerfeldt....
This is obsidian
The grip of winter unkind
Devil will follow
Be cast out and sworn to the dark
Take the road where devil's speak
God is dead, God is dead

Throw out the darkness
Inside you, telling you now
Senses corrupted
Controlling a poisonous will
Take the road where devil's speak
God is dead, God is dead

In the corner of my eye
Demon fades from the hole

Led the blind
Searched to find
A pathway to the sun
Saw the signs
Intertwined
Forgave me all my sins
Why, why
Oh, stigmats revealing our vices
And oh, oh, stigmats revealing our vices

God is dead, God is dead

General CommentIn the first two paragraph's-
its about a satan speaking to the people or the followers of god....
he is trying to establish his supremacy over people....like he is possesing a city by showing his power n sayin that god is dead. He can heal the problems of the people but god cant....satan is telling the masses to take the road where the devil's speak i.e. devil's rule.finally he rules the songwriter

    Last para-
its difficult to interpret but i think it means dat the songwriter who got posessed by satan has now managed to free himself(demons fade from the hole)...he is blinded by the darkness of the evil and is in the search of truth i.e. light...saw the signs interwined means the 'cross' who helped him forgive all the sins...
still in the end its written god is dead....but maybe its just to keep the poetic effect...

General CommentThe actual lyrics from the booklet are:

This trail is obsidian, the grip of Winter uncoiled
    A lover would follow me
Cast down and sworn to the dark

Take the road where devils speak:
    "God is dead"

    The wealth of darkness
    Inside you, telling you "now"
    Your senses corrupted
    Controlling a poisonous will

Take the road where devils speak:
    "God is dead"

In the corner of my eye
You are tearing flesh from bone

Led the blind in search to find
    A pathway to the sun
    Saw the signs intertwine
And forgave me all my sins

    No stigmas revealing your vices
And there are no stigmas revealing our vices

    God is dead

    **

Personally I think it's about schizophrenia (using demonic possession as a metaphor), but who knows.

    General CommentForbidden love

This trail is obsidian, the grip of Winter uncoiled
(The obsidian trail could be another way saying the path of unrighteousness, because obsidian is dark and is a stone found underground kinda like saying " a place of fire and brimstone".)
( the idea is that winter holds back the spring flowers, and spring is the season of love.)
    A lover would follow me
Cast down and sworn to the dark
(Straight up.... seduced. Maybe before wedlock? maybe just a forbidden encounter )

Take the road where devils speak:
    "God is dead"
(Do you what you know you shouldn't, or at least take the risk of doing what you know people might judge you.)

    The wealth of darkness
    Inside you, telling you "now"
    Your senses corrupted
    Controlling a poisonous will
(But the body aches!! i think this describes the inner struggle and torment of knowing what you want and knowing what you should probably not do. )

Take the road where devils speak:
    "God is dead"

In the corner of my eye
You are tearing flesh from bone
( he is aware of your struggle)

Led the blind in search to find
    A pathway to the sun
    Saw the signs intertwine
And forgave me all my sins
(interesting part for me i think i grasp what is trying to be portrayed but I'm very unsure and can't really find the words to describe it. Maybe its saying that it's not as bad as it seems.)

    No stigmas revealing your vices
And there are no stigmas revealing our vices
( This is pretty clear wrap up saying that no one knows what you did, or no one know what you like to do.)

    God is dead

(For me this song is totally about sex, or rather the emotional journey and rational thought process of someone having sex. I absolutely love it. )

General CommentMusic is what feelings sounds like...
So this is what I personally feel while Going through it's Music & lyrics:

    Song Meaning ---
This is Volcanic Rock, In the Dark winteric atmosphere the Devil Walks ... Go and chase him to be like him; Go & chase him where many like him speaks God Is Dead

Emit Darkness from inside you cause it's says--you were wrong till now somehow you were dealing with your deadly will till now. Just Keep on going to the Roads where Devil chant God Is Dead.

I can see now what the World knows devil is Gone from Me cause now It's something different & new in Me (Not what the World Things about Devil it's something Darkly Beautiful)
Cause it's like letting the Blind to find the Sun (Finding why own way with my selfsuggession & mistakes)
It's like Understanding the signs in many different ways (Not in the way that is said & Done) and then...

It will forgave me my sins but why the Man is always Judged by his disgrace & wrong that he had Done.

My InterpretationIf you watch the music video, it gives clues as to what this song is about.

"This trail is obsidian, the grip of Winter uncoiled
    A lover would follow me
Cast down and sworn to the dark"

In the video a girl jumps off a building before the lyrics even start. She proceeds to fall to the ground, and upon contact she bursts into a cloud of blood/energy/whatever travelling downward. She committed suicide. The grip of winter uncoiled means that the hopelessness in her life (her winter) is now being 'uncoiled' (undone and changed into something else) by her suicide. "A lover would follow me~" she is probably committing suicide over a love of some sort.

"Take the road where devils speak:
'God is dead' " The road where the morally righteous decision, or conscience bound choice is unheard of.

    "The wealth of darkness
    Inside you, telling you "now"
    Your senses corrupted
Controlling a poisonous will" This is again about how her negativity in life has lead her to this point of suicide. She is standing on the edge of the building ready to jump to take her own life, and all the negativity builds up inside her (her wealth of darkness), and it twists and suppresses her primal instinct of survival. Her senses are corrupted, her will is poisonous, and the climax of this pain is the decision to jump from the building... "Now."

The chorus again to reinforce the point of where there is no righteousness or morality.

"In the corner of my eye
You are tearing flesh from bone" indicative of the rest of the world/god; or the morally sound judging through passing thoughts, or judging directly in relation to suicide, or perhaps someone judging this exact suicide suicide in particular.

"Led the blind in search to find
    A pathway to the sun
    Saw the signs intertwine
And forgave me all my sins" At the moment of the jump she had chosen her path, and 'led her blind self' in search to find a way out (a pathway to the sun). The forgiving of all her sins was the moment of death where her life was cleansed, as were her 'sins'.

"No stigmas revealing your vices, and there are no stigmas revealing our vices" The reasons that led her to suicide are no longer a disgraceful thing about her, because she is now dead. She gave up on any idea of living, and her secrets will be kept with her eternally in her rest. To her, God (hope in life) had died, and all her vices and afflictions are now dead as she died.

The scenes in the video of "The Devil" overtaking the city is just a metaphor for how her mind has been clouded, and slowly enshrouded by 'darkness' (negativity). The in between scenes of her face with the patterns shows her in despair, completely oblivious to the world besides her past and current afflictions.

Another reason I think this song is about suicide is because Opeth have written numerous songs that have to deal with an individuals death. Whether the song is from the perspective of the one dying, or from that of someone touched by or affected by one dying, Opeth writes a LOT about death on all their albums.

This is merely my opinion, of course.

My InterpretationYou guys clearly didn't understand sh** about the lyrics. This is clearly about philosophy. More precisely, about philosophers and intellectuals doing the "devil's dirty work", that is, spreading evil ideas that lead people to despair and, ultimately, suicide.

The hint that the lyrics are about philosophers and intellectuals is on the chorus: "Take the road where devils speak: 'God is dead!'"

The phrase "God is dead!" is a famous quote by Friederich Nietzsche. Nietzsche warned us that society is getting increasingly secular and its moral values no longer come from religion. Society needs to create new values without God or it will crumble.

Many atheist philophers that came after Nietzche, like Karl Marx, and later, the Cultural Marxists of the Frankfurt School like Herbert Marcuse, and the French post-modernists like Michel Foucault, advocated that people needed to yield to every desire (including sexual desires), that all stigmas should be destroyed (See, in the lyrics Opeth says "No stigmas revealing our vices"). The purpose of life is then the pursuit of earthly pleasures, with no restraints whatsoever. The lyrics ackowlodge the seductive power of these ideas ("A lover will follow you, be cast down and sworn to the dark") and will start spreading them, advocating them, and living their personal lives according to these preachings (represented in the video by the girl who appears to swear allegiance to a "nerdy" lover and then live all her sexual fantasies).

Conservative intellectuals like Roger Scruton call this view "nihilism". No morals, no restraints, no responsibility. In the conservative views, this leads to the death of the soul and leads individuals to dispair (suicide being its ultimate manifestation). When Opeth says "Lead the blind in search to find the pathway to the sun" calls for the common citizen that is aware of the destructive fruits of nihilist philosophers' work (then the name "The Devil's Orchard) to fight the good fight and start talking to their peers who were seduced by this evil philosophy.

General Comment@darksinthe ah yes, the video perfectly coincides and depicts the power of the lyrics. Incredible interpretation but I think it be nice if after she threw herself to her inevitable impending death that as she dropped through the sky the darkness transcended into light as all the thoughts of her child and loved ones raced through her mind. So she hits the pavement and bounced back up through the air and the darkness whirls into beautiful colors. She realizes she had another choice to take the pain and anguish and turn it into greatness. She is now invincible and cannot be broken. She is smiling and even though she might revisit that hole every now and than she's thicker and will get through it and bounce back everytime.

My InterpretationOpeth doesn't write deep lyrics, never have. My guess is that these aren't about anything, they're just words that sound good.
