Staircase Lyrics

I walk down the staircase
Magnetic pull
Back to the other place
That I cannot go

I'm sending a chopper
To steal you away
The pot is full
Let me take control

Let me take control

The pot is full
Of secrets to be told
Secrets to be told

Out of orbit
And I always will
The pot is full
Let me take control

Let me take control

The pot is full
Of secrets to be told
Secrets to be told

Oh, oh, oooooh
Yeah

honestly..im definately not a person who tries to make everything religious. but when i hear the lyrics, it sound to me like its supposed to be God talking. its a little harder to tell from these new lyrics, than from thom york's original version from new york. but if you read it through, thinking its God talking to someone he loves it makes perfect sense. especially in the original version where he says "let it go, let me take control" it sounds like he's talking to someone who suffered a great ordeal and cant trust him afterwards. and when i hear him say "the pot is full", it makes me think of the persons suffering, saying that they cant take anymore. and "of secrets to be told" sounds like God had a reason for the suffering " and he is going to tell him the secrets of why he put him through it. The whole thing just sounded like it was from someone up above.

its probably a total stretch. but thats just what it sounded like to me

I think the song is about celebrity and the addictive quality of it 'magnetic pull of staircase' - he wants to go back to the old life but he can't and there may be memories of someone that he associates with the old life that he yearns for The chopper is a symbol of wealth, not everyone can have a chopper he wants to send it in and get someone from the past who he loves or cares about his pot of full of experience, of life and of memories and secrets that celebrity does not own only he owns the pot of his own secrets and he can control almost everything in his life due to his celebrity but he can't control the other person who won't let him take her into his orbit but he wants to the song is deep about his current stage of life middle age he is remembering something precious of the past and that is why the song is really beautiful and a bit melancholy the high sounds at the end is the conclusion of the yearnings he cannot reach or have

I think this song is talking about an old relationship that Thom cannot forget.

"I walk down the staircase - Magnetic pull". Thom can't resist meeting her again, and wants her to come back. "The pot is full - Of secrets to be told". Thom wanted to know her better. It was such a short relationship, Thom doesn't want to go back to the "other place", a lonely, gloomy place. He feels like he is missing something. I'm not really sure how to explain it really (since I'm a dumbass 13 year old lol), a complex way of singing about love being an emotion - a jigsaw fitting the rest of the puzzle.

I adore this song, it beats TKOL by a million miles, like Supercollider and The Butcher. Just brilliant.

I am completely in agreement with deviant5. I am surprised you are only 13 and you are no dumbass darling very insightful. Anyway, when I first heard the song I had to hear it again to try to make sense of it.

I do think that he is missing someone; someone he cant forget and that he cant fight the pull this person has on him. He is probably in love with this person. He wants to take him/her away? to be with him? Out of orbit- he feels out of place? everywhere he is? he feels that he doesnt...

"He wants to take him/her away?"

Quote, "Send in the chopper-"

I think you're right about that. ;)

Glad to know we agree in the way we interpret this song lol... maybe we are making too much of it.

I think it's a song about a staircase.

to me this song seems to be a surreal exploration of the mind, or

about the 'place' from which the music comes, reassuring that the source is still flowing the pot is full secrets to be told- ideas, words and melodies yet unknown

out of orbit a sense of detachment, and freedom about the feeling of incoming ideas where do they come from?

the staircase leads down a train of thought and one does not always seem to be entirely in control of it, magnetic pull it can't be the only staircase

let me take control of the power lurking in these lurid depths

it's all wrapped up in a delicate balance beautiful as the song is

I think this song is about someone losing it completely due to stress and work or something and Thom is saying, "I'll deal with it. Let me take control. It's okay."

Song Meaning

I hear "I have always, And always will" instead of "Out of orbit".

Lyric Correction

Same here! Almost certainly.

Thom is very political and could be taking a stand: "the pot" "chopper" could also be refering to Murdoch and the illuminati:Power,Lies and Corruption (title of a New Order album);). I personally, grew up in the 80's, and if we want a better future for our children we need to take a stand: "A NEW ORDER" so to speak.

The romantic in me and what I am going through personally really enjoy lululee's take on the song. :)

I also agree with Crane42. Great comments guys!

As in "The Daily Mail", I think this is a political song. On one hand it reminds me of the Wikileaks, when they talk about a pot full of secrets to be told... and how the pursuit of truth will continue whatever happens to Assange and the whole Wikileaks stuff. On the other hand, it also reminds me on tabloids, and how we get dominated by the irresistible neeed to go downstairs and rejoice on the rich and famous's s**t, while we give up making our real revolution.

"the pot is full of secrets, secrets to be told" i can relate to that....such a brilliant song.
