The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
Most of my sweet memories were buried in the sand
The fire and the pain will now be coming to an end
How did you get to save me from this desolate wasteland
In your eyes I see the dawn of brighter days again.
With my tears you washed away the mud stuck on my hands
All the things you're trying to do make me a better man
Now I remember the joy and the taste of candy cane
The innocence of youth and the sound of major scales.
Most of what I used to be had vanished in the waves
The memories of the boy I've been were drowning and you saved them
Now I remember the joy and the meaning of the fate
The color of the truth and the sound of sunny days.
Most of my sweet memories were buried in the sand
The fire and the pain will now be coming to an end
How did you get to save me from this desolate wasteland
In your eyes I see the dawn of brighter days again.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Magical

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Punchline

Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
This song is about a hurt lonely person that finds a new love to pick him/her up on his/her feet again.
"Now I remember the joy and the taste of candy cane
The innocence of youth and the sound of major scales."
"The memories of the boy I've been were drowning and you saved them"
These are some of the best lines I've ever heard, he's saying that this girl that he fell in love with is bringing out the little kid in him. You find that this is true when you get the right person.
This feels like a counterpart to Iron to me. That song is about a soldier broken and muted by the horrors of war and the deeds he's done, this feels like that same person returning home and slowly coming back into himself with help from a loved one. Excellent songs, whether they bear a relation to each other or not.
Remember that his album is a complete story overall<br /> <br /> "Most of my sweet memories were buried in the sand<br /> <br /> The fire and the pain will now be coming to an end"<br /> <br /> He's probably the soldier from "Iron" who then found this new love who...<br /> <br /> "...washed away the mud stuck on my hands<br /> <br /> All the things you're trying to do make me a better man"<br /> <br /> Trying to overcome the stuff he saw/did/felt in some kind of "war"?<br /> <br /> <br /> So yeah, you are right.
After years of growing up and facing the harsh reality of the world; after loosing the wonder and the magic that surrounds everything when we are children, he has found new meaning in real love. All that was lost retuns at once when we feel love, the whole world shines anew in colors and light. A new dawn indeed, that we can see in the eyes of the one who loves us back.
