I press my wrist against your ribcage
To feel our pulses in the same place
There's a safety in knowing
Something stays where it should stay
I should have started practicing this long ago
Instead I've been pretending that I didn't know
You've got to write down some words
To make a book out of a blank page
You build your towers out of toy blocks
And keep your secrets in a cigar box
Seems a safe place to keep all the thoughts that you don't want
And use the same pen to write down
The names of the ones you love and the ones you keep around
I bet we'd all look the same
If we ever fell into the wrong hands

I've yet to see a piece that cannot be soured
And I've yet to be that tree that shades your sleeping hours
Are we all connected
Anchored by wanting more
Cause I've yet to see the days I've been living for

I heard a sound like a satellite
Coming from the mouth of a shining light
In the back seat of a van that was meant to take us places
It said, I'll never be your runner or your lover or your fighter
Cause you're always gonna need to want what it is that you can't have

I've yet to see a piece that cannot be soured
And I've yet to reach that tree that shades your sleeping hours
All that time I spent looking for something that matters more
Has only kept me from the days
The days I've been living for

I've said some things I regret
Tore off all I didn't forget
At least I'll have to attempt
To react, to react
The days I've been living for
The days I've been living for

I pressed my wrist against your ribcage
Just to feel it when you pull away
There's a disconnect that's louder
Than the things that we don't say

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
