All the pictures of your mother
All the places that you know
All the lessons of your lovers
And the things you never show

Y'know you could be mistaking me for somebody else
All the roses you could send to me can sit on my shelf
Now my chain is feeling heavy on my neck when I write
But my heart is beating steady and I know it never lies

Dead could, dead could start to feel
And your eyes will start to flood
If you knew the kind of steel
Running in my royal blood

Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna

(You could tear out my heart)

Size me up, I know you did
Care for you, you know I did

Making waves like a kid
Run away so easily
If the past could forgive
All our doubts god forbid
Throwing stones like a kid
Making waves so easily
Call me brave, call me bright
Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night)
For my sake, for my right
Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night)

Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
(You could tear out my heart)

All the wild horses
All the tigers with the stripes
In the city all the voices
Bold and busy is my type
On the banks of good and evil
Raising arms like my tree
All the creatures all the people
They want a piece of me

You could be mistaking me for somebody else
If you don't forsake me well you can call me Kels
Now my mind is in the heavens and my shoes are in the mud
Leaving traces size 7 running in my royal blood

General Commentinteresting thoughts here. i could try to analyze it but i really just want to say that i wish all music sounded like this. this is amazing. i think the efforts put forth so far into analyzing the meaning are getting somewhere, though maybe too literally...

Lyric CorrectionThis song has so much sadness and meaning if you interpret the lyrics correctly, which is tough sometimes because of the purposeful distortion but that adds to the value when you finally decipher them I think. I'll break them down in the next comment but my changes are as follows, some corrections and some different hypotheses:

All the pictures of your mother
All the places that you know
All the lessons of your lovers
And the things you never show
Y'know you could be mistaking me for somebody else
All the roses you can send to me can sit on my shelf
Now my chain is feeling heavy on my neck (when I ride?)
But my heart is beating steady and I know it never lies.
Dead could (dead could) start to feel and your eyes will start to flood.
If you know the kind of steel running in my royal blood.

Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
(You could tear out my heart)

Size me up, I know you did
Good for you, you know I did.
    Making waves like a kid
    Run away so easily.
If the past could forgive all adults god forbid
    Throwing stones like a kid
    Make your way so easily
Call me brave, call me bright
    Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night)
For my sake, for my right
    Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night

    [Refrain]

    All the wild horses
All the tigers with the stripes
In the city all the voices
Bold and busy is my type
On the banks of good and evil
    Raising arms like my tree
All the creatures all the people
They want a piece of me

You could be mistaking me for somebody else
If you don't forsake me well you can call me Kels
Now my mind is in the heavens and my shoes are in the mud
Leaving traces size 7 running in my royal blood

    Reversed lyrics:
    (Real easily)
(I know you did, care for you you know I did)
    (Like a kid)
    (Run away so easily)
(Down down down here, I'm down I'm down here)

My Interpretation"All the pictures of your mother
All the places that you know
All the lessons of your lovers
And the things you never show"

Clearly she's singing to someone from her past, presumably a former love. This to me sounds like a rebuke, the kinds of things you throw in your opponents face during an argument to put their character into question by inquiring of their true worth.

"Y'know you could be mistaking me for somebody else
All the roses you can send to me can sit on my shelf
Now my chain is feeling heavy on my neck (when I ride?)
But my heart is beating steady and I know it never lies."

She's cut(ting) herself off from the situation. She wants nothing to do with the attempts to contact her or the peace offering flowers, she knows she can live without him because her heart keeps beating even through the pain.

"Dead could (dead could) start to feel and your eyes will start to flood.
If you know the kind of steel running in my royal blood."

Even the dead couldn't withstand this pain and even he will start to cry, but she is not going to budge. This is echoed at the end of the song with a different sense - here I think it has a certain sense of finality; she is making it clear that she is adamant about being apart with him no matter how much emotion he lays on it or how much it hurts.

"Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
Place it (place it) near me (me)
Wish you could do without me - you're gonna
(You could tear out my heart)"

He is giving it his last shot - one more set of flowers, which she of course won't take. "You're gonna" is I believe a direct response to "Wish you could live without me," as in "you're going to have to find some way to get along whether you like it or not." Honestly I think there's something about a chain in the last line but above is the only thing I could make out confidently.

Size me up, I know you did
Good for you, you know I did.

He found her wanting, she found otherwise. Note that she's not saying "Size you up, you know I did." She looked at herself and realized she doesn't need him, regardless of what he does to try to win her back.

    Making waves like a kid
    Run away so easily.
If the past could forgive all adults god forbid
    Throwing stones like a kid
    Make your way so easily
Call me brave, call me bright
    Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night)
For my sake, for my right
    Messing up it's only right
Fascinated by the sounds (up all night)

This is the whole conflict around which the song revolves. Someone made a mistake - whether it was her fault or his is irrelevant, but he reacted poorly and now is paying the consequences. He will have a chance to repent, but the present is not the time. They were children in a world they didn't understand, and now that they have made adult mistakes they've been thrust into the adult cognizance of the world.

    [Refrain]

    All the wild horses
All the tigers with the stripes
In the city all the voices
Bold and busy is my type
On the banks of good and evil
    Raising arms like my tree
All the creatures all the people
They want a piece of me

She's living in the world of adults now, and she's thriving. He is no longer the central conflict of the song after the cathartic release in the last verse.

You could be mistaking me for somebody else
If you don't forsake me well you can call me Kels
Now my mind is in the heavens and my shoes are in the mud
Leaving traces size 7 running in my royal blood

The singer's name is Kelsey Bulkin, the DJ laying the beats is Sabzi. Made in Heights are only these two, ths if you want to recognize her in the adult world that is the name she goes by. Her past is shed and she's moving forward, making tracks in the ground and dreaming big without looking back at all.

These lyrics betray the confidence that has developed at the end of the song, which is why they're in reverse; it is disorienting to listen to backwards lyrics but it is easy to hide emotion behind them.

    Reversed lyrics:
    (Real easily)
(I know you did, care for you you know I did)
    (Like a kid)
    (Run away so easily)
(Down down down here, I'm down I'm down here)

Note above the "you know I did" and it's usage here. She's admitting that she did care for him, that the facade put in place in the first stanza was just that and that she had to fight back her feelings if she was to grow up. She sized him up and found him worth it, but not after they were forced to realize their mistakes.

So much pain in this song, even after the glimmer of hope at the end. Thoughts?
