This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
Smoke ring for my halo
Angel demon human
Overestimated
Over and over
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Smoke ring for my halo
Human angel demon
Underestimated
Right under the roof of your house
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then, yeah
Sippin' from the soda can
Exercises my hand
Pacifies the land
Makes the most out of your chill time, man
I feel like layin' down
I feel like layin' down
Yeah, and I want to do it again
Oh, what a mess I guess I'm in
Angel demon human
Overestimated
Over and over
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Think I can see it now
Smoke ring for my halo
Human angel demon
Underestimated
Right under the roof of your house
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then
Thought you could see it then, yeah
Sippin' from the soda can
Exercises my hand
Pacifies the land
Makes the most out of your chill time, man
I feel like layin' down
I feel like layin' down
Yeah, and I want to do it again
Oh, what a mess I guess I'm in

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

It's supposed "Over estimated", not "over as the maiden"
yes... it's "overestimated," and "underestimated" in the following stanza.
yes... it's "overestimated," and "underestimated" in the following stanza.
"exercises my hand," as opposed to "it's the size of my hand"
i do hope you don't think really believe he says "jizzatown"
Seems like he's saying "Sippin' from the sewer can Exercises my hand Pacifies the land Makes the most out of your chill time, man"
could be "Pacifies the lamb"

*Excersises my hand (2nd line, last paragraph)
lots of jesus/homeless references going on. <br /> I feel like "playing down"<br /> <br /> first verse:<br /> homeless man who smokes is called an angel, a demon, and a human... the rest have made it, but he hasn't.<br /> second verse:<br /> as he smokes he reflects that people have roofs to sleep under and he mulls over it. that's all he can think of. <br /> third verse:<br /> sippin from a sewer can (soda can/beer can) and exercises hand over a trash can like some kind of gypsy reference of trash can bon fires. It pacifies the land because he's not getting into any trouble. he feels like playing down meaning it wants to make his rut seem less of an issue than it really is, but than reflects on how he wants to get back into the rat race and get into life - like the rest of em'. <br /> <br /> Bad ass interpretation by muah! :D<br />
sounds like some homeless references in there..
