The Weight of the Sea Lyrics

The weight of the sea
A thousand fathoms down embracing me
My windows up but it's silver outside
For there's a light that seems to never go out
By the river mouth
Your tin roof thrashing as the rain heads south
No tap tap tapping on my window pane
Your belly's soil I wander through the remains

I ain't waiting for a change for change won't come
When you would love you'd love so strange but now it's done
What are you anyway?

There's a street to the right
A rearview staircase where people would drink and fight
A flophouse room above a railroad track
A muted whistle for my lips they were always cracked
The bats in full flight
Feasting on the balmy night
I see a room and your furniture's bare
Between two fingers a thin strand of your hair

I ain't waiting for a change for change won't come
When you would love you'd love so strange but what's done is done
What are you anyway?

This song explores small town life where everyone is aware of everyone's secrets. The band said it was written after a stay in Narooma on the New South Wales South Coast (Australia). The objective of the song was to give it an off-kilter, almost vaudevillian sound.
