Day and night same routine
starting to feel like a machine
I get dressed and rush out the house
Grab a coffee then to the job
Work for hours sit at my desk
Fuck around and I'm like the rest
The computer...the day
Realize that we are both the same
Feel like a robot

Somebody please turn it off
I'm about to obey
Life like this goin make me freeze
Yeah
I gotta get get out of this program
And find out who I really am
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
Somebody please turn it off (I'm not)
Please make it stop (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not a robot)

Five o' clock comes around
'Fore I go home, I make my rounds
Pick up the kids, stop at the store
Buy the same shit and nothing more
Get there and my man's on the couch
Watching TiVo, running his mouth
I make dinner, get right for bed
He's up waiting, asking for help
Feel like a robot

Somebody please turn it off
I'm about to obey
Life like this goin make me freeze
Yeah
I gotta get get out of this program
And find out who I really am
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
Somebody please turn it off (I'm not)
Please make it stop (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not a robot)

Feel like a robot
Somebody please turn it off
I'm about to obey
Life like this goin make me freeze
Yeah
I gotta get get out of this program
And find out who I really am
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
Somebody please turn it off (I'm not)
Please make it stop (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not)
I'm not a robot (I'm not a robot)

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
