Get off my shoulders I told you to stay away you're still a big part of me
Dance with delusional angels of sin
Kill false demons you might kill false angels too
That's not what we wanna do
Together as one we do as were told living together and fighting as one
The dominant mind will prove you all blind
Finding the balance to leave you behind
I've learned so far controlling all the dark
Evelyn visions in the sky, all on my shoulder, all in my mind
I still hear you sing my sweet love Evelyn
In fact I'm so cold, but I made up my mind to see where it will lead
In fact I'm so lonely I...
Stay away you're still a big part of me
Dance with delusional angels of sin
Kill false demons you might kill false angels too
That's not what we wanna do
Evelyn visions in the sky, all on my shoulder, all in my mind
I still hear you sing my sweet love Evelyn
In fact I'm so cold, but I made up my mind to see where it will lead
In fact I'm so lonely I...
There's nothing on either shoulder
Spreading the fire fever into something more that needs ya
Maybe you fall forever and maybe we die together
Angel Evelyn I die
I still hear you sing my sweet love Evelyn
In fact I'm so cold, but I made up my mind to see where it will lead
In fact I'm so lonely I...

I think this song is about struggeling to get rid of religion.
"Stay away you're still a big part of me Dance with delusional angels of sin"
may refer to the struggeling to get rid of the delusion of the biblical sins.
"Don't listen to all this bollocks There's nothing on either shoulder"
I think this refers to that religion is bollocks, and there aren't a "good" guy and a "bad" guy floating on your sholders and try to whisper to do good or bad (like Donald Duck stripes :)
"Spreading the fire fever into something more that needs ya"
"fire fever" may refer to the fear of hell, and dont worry, go do something else usefull :)
"Maybe you fall forever and maybe we die together"
This one may refer to that you might fall (go to hell) forever, or we (all) might just die forever, and death is the end of it.
GREAT SONG!

I agree with arxx but I think that Evelyn is actually a woman who passed away and losing her is causing him to debate his religion, the verses Barney sings are the part of him that wants to reject religion, while the clean vocals in the chorus is the guy hoping she is actually in a better place
@Onslaughter I’d listened to some of Volbeats more mainstream songs before but I had never really listened to Evelyn. Until my daughter, who’s name was Evelyn, passed away. Evelyn’s older sister and I started listening to it one day just cause the title was her name. I completely agree with your thoughts on it bro. And I will forever think this song was meant for my family.

This song is a complex and emotional exploration of love, loss, grief, and acceptance. It's about struggling to move forward after losing someone you loved deeply, that one being referred to as Evelyn. It also contains some death grunts provided by Mark "Barney" Greenway of Napalm Death.

Uhh my first meaning. Sorry my english isnt perfect, For me is this Song more about the different sites of people or us. One Site is the voice in our head with More hate. And the other is more like „ i miss you“ „ i want our time back“ . Also both site‘s wanted the same. But they cant geh it back, so one is angry about that and the other is more sad. That is the feeling i get when i hear this song , and for me its one of the Favorite songs from volbeat

I agree with both of you. Both of the explainations you guys gave seem to be spot on. I didn't ever REALLY listen to the lyrics until today. GREAT SONG.

well what i gather from it. it might seem like religious, but to me it sounds like the "false angels/demons" may be someone who wont mind their own business. sounds to me like this may be an ex that he still loved but others wouldnt stay out of it..... the chorus sounds to me like hes hurting cause he didnt want to do this, but knows there was no choice.
stay away youre still a big part of me - kinda hit me like. this wont end well, leave me alone as distance will help me resist you.
well noone knows for sure what that song means except those who wrote it. but this is the meaning i get from the song. GREAT f'n tune all day anyway

This song is about religion, however not getting rid of religion, but understanding that we owe nothing to a Christian god that supposedly created us in original sin! It is actually more about being able to decipher between what is right, or wrong as a human hence the accidental killing of false demons and false angels! He also says there is nothing on either shoulder referring to the demon in red on one and the Christian angel on the other, so just make your own mind Evelyn. That is my own interpretation, but these guys come from a country that was heavy in Norse religion, as well as Odinism. I fucking love their intentions,
