I guess you really did it this time
Left yourself in your war path
Lost your balance on a tightrope
Lost your mind trying to get it back

Wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days?
Always a bigger bed to crawl into
Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything
And everybody believed in you?

It's alright, just wait and see
Your string of lights are still bright to me, oh
Who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
Still an innocent

Did some things you can't speak of
But at night, you live it all again
You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now
If only you had seen what you know now then

Wasn't it easier in your firefly-catching days?
When everything out of reach
Someone bigger brought down to you
Wasn't it beautiful running wild 'til you fell asleep
Before the monsters caught up to you?

It's alright, just wait and see
Your string of lights are still bright to me, oh
Who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
It's okay, and life is a tough crowd
Thirty-two and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent

Time turns flames to embers
You'll have new Septembers
Every one of us has messed up too, ooh
Minds change like the weather
I hope you remember
Today is never too late to be brand new, oh

It's alright, just wait and see
Your string of lights are still bright to me, oh
Who you are is not where you've been
You're still an innocent
It's okay, and life is a tough crowd
Thirty-two and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You're still an innocent
You're still an innocent

Lost your balance on a tightrope, oh
It's never too late to get it back

I really love this song. The lyrics are so beautiful, and she sings it with so much emotion. I don't think she wrote it about Kanye, even though the lyrics (somewhat) apply to that situation. I feel like this song has so much emotion that it couldn't be about something as silly as an award show interruption by some jerk rapper she doesn't even know. Anyways, beautiful song that can apply to all adults who made mistakes.

i know this song is about kanye but when i listen to it, i actually think about myself like when i've messed up or did something i regret or if i'm feeling lost after making a bad decision or gettting a bad grade lol. i'm 19 right now and it's hard having to grow up and become independent somedays i just wish i was still an innocent kid. like this part says,

"Wasn't it easier in your firefly catching days When everything out of reach someone bigger brought down to you Wasn't it beautiful running wild 'til you fell asleep Before the monsters caught up to you" so thinking of when i've messed up in my life, listening to this song makes me feel better about myself. like it's not the end of the world and there's always a new september...there's always a new day :)

This song is definintley about growing up. You lose your innosence and the child inside of you knows your doing wrong. This song is based on forgiveness and understanding the fact that we all make mistakes and it's part of growing up. They make who we are. Life gets easier as the years go on but we just have to remember that we can't be ashamed for every time we mess up and we can't let it lable us. What we do is never who we are Love the lyrics. Beautiful song

I really liked Taylor's VMA performance of this song, and although I believe it is about Kanye West, I still think it is a great song and could be interpreted however you like.

Here is my interpretation of the song (about Kanye):

"But some things you can't speak of But tonight you'll live it all again" These lines are talking about how most people don't talk that much about it anymore, however tonight he will have to re-live what he did last year.

"You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now If only you had seen what you know now then" The first line is about how people wouldn't say negative things about him (shattered on the floor) if he didn't do it and the second line is about how if he knew what it would have caused, he probably wouldn't have done it.

Like melodious10 mentioned about the line "32 is still growing up now", I think that is a reference to Kanye, since he was 32 at the last VMA's.

"Who you are is not what you did" Basically saying that just because you do one stupid thing, it does not shape who you are or who you've become.

"Time turns flames to embers You'll have new Septembers" The first part of the first line is about how after the 09 VMA's, everyone way talking about the "Kanye-Taylor thing". The whole incident was burning hot (flames) and you saw it everywhere. The second part is about how with time, the 'flames' have died down to 'embers' and now people don't talk about it as much. The second line is about how there will be more VMA's (they happen in September)

Although, I think this song is about the Kanye West thing, I still really like it. I believe Taylor may have wrote it to finally achieve closure with the whole incident.

    Song Meaning

Even if it is about Kanye, I think of it as a song about just forgiving somebody for what they've done to you and moving on. They're still innocent. Everybody has messed up before. Even though they messed up, they still shine bright. It's not about what you did, or what you've said to somebody, it's you as an individual and you can always fix mistakes. There's always that chance to start over with someone.

I like the song, but not the fact that Taylor used it at the VMA's. I mean, I love Taylor and I'm a fan of hers, but the idea for using it then and showing a video of what happened at last year's ceremony...It just seemed incredibly immature to me. She could have just left it alone and plus, it would have been awesome for her to perform 'Mine' instead. I love the song so much and would have liked to hear it live.

    My Interpretation

Obviously the song is about Kanye, what with certain references made and the way it was performed at the VMAs (using the video of the incident), however the lyrical meaning can be far expanded beyond "Kanye interrupted me and it sucked but now I forgive him". I see it as an empowering song that essentially says, "Everyone screws up, but there's always time to change". These lyrics, to me, are the best example of that:

"Time turns flames to embers You'll have new Septembers Every one of us has messed up too Minds change like the weather I hope you remember Today is never too late to be brand new."

I agree with rskid14's interpretation of "time turns flames to embers", but I want to add something else. I also think it might be talking about a rush of emotion and how you realize your mistakes after the fact. The flames represent strong, uncontrolled anger or other emotions, but with time those feelings fade and everything clears up, and you can truly see the situation. In the end, time lets you look at things differently and realize how foolish your actions were.

"Lost your balance on a tight rope It's never too late to get it back"

I think this is about Kanye's already kinda rocky public image. He was known for being an asshole before this, so he was already "walking a tightrope" with his public image when the emotional "flames" forced him to lose his composure (balance). Taylor's saying that he can always fix this.

Finally, I think the "innocent" lines simply say that he's not done anything yet unforgivable, and that there's always potential to fix things.

"Life is Full of Little Interruptions"

Hmm... John Mayer? I think not.

But I relate to this song so well. Oh my God, this song is amazing.

'Guess you really did it this time Left yourself in your war path Lost your balance on a tight rope Lost your mind trying to get it back'

I did some things that I regret that ruined me. I felt like I jumped off a tightrope into a deep hole filled with dark blacknes... There was nothing to catch me, nothing to make me see that I wasn't falling, I was stopped, suspended in midair, blind and hurt. (See Starts With Goodbye and Lessons Learned by Carrie Underwood)

'Wasn't it easier in your lunchbox days Always a bigger bed to crawl into Wasn't it beautiful when you believed in everything And everybody believed in you'

I know, I'm thirteen, but I don't want to grow up. I want to go back in time and redo somethings. I want to be back in 6th grade when everything was perfect. I thought that there were so many things that I would change back then, but looking back now, I would give anything to relive that year again with the same mistakes as long as I didn't have to go on to seventh grade, where I made the worst mistake of my life. I know you people who are like 20 and 30 will say I have no idea what I'm talking about and I probably don't, but I just hate myself for doing what I did.

'It's alright, just wait and see Your string of lights is still bright to me Oh, who your are is not where you've been You're still an innocent'

I wish this was true. I wish my best friend would say this to me. Maybe then I would be able to start to forgive myself for what I did. I know I'll never fully forgive myself for doing it, but I might somewhat if I knew she did.

'Did some things you can't speak of But at night you live it all again You wouldn't be shattered on the floor now If only you had seen what you know now then'

I did somethings, as you know, that I don't tell anyone about. No one, not even my mother or my current best friend, knows how much I regret what I did, how I wish I could change it. I stay up at night and cry myself to sleep because I feel so bad now. Now I'm shattered on the floor. And trust me, if I had known what the consequences would have been, I would not done it.

'Wasn't it easier in your firefly catching days When everything out of reach someone bigger brought down to you Wasn't it beautiful running wild 'til you fell asleep Before the monsters caught up to you'

I still wish I could go back to those days when everything was fun, when I still believed in myself, when I was so blissfully happy and I didn't care about anything...

'It's okay, life is a tough crowd'

Trust me, I know. You make one HUGE mistake (or hundreds of little ones, however you want to think of it) and suddently you've ruined your whole social life.

'Time turns flames to embers You'll have new Septembers Every one of us has messed up too Minds change like the weather I hope you remember Today is never too late to be brand new.'

I made that huge mistake at the start of seventh grade, in September, so that's kind of irionic. But it's nice to be reminded that we've all messed up, that I'm not the only one going through this pain, that I can try to be better, that maybe, somehow and someway, I can start over.

'Lost your balance on a tight rope It's never too late to get it back'

I hope this is true. I'm not certain right not, but I hope it is.

BTW, it's AT NIGHT, not TONIGHT in did somethings you can't speak of but... ect.

The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
