In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Oh yeah!
The fire it rages
It burns clear in the night
Illuminates the path before us
Now true our arrows strike
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising against you
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising to crush you
Now the tide is turning
Our might striking fear
Our passion foretells our triumph
Smite those who stand against us
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising against you
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising against you
We are your fast approaching doom
Now tremble
Let the tyrants fall
Let the sons raise the call
Let the tyrants fall
We are your fast approaching doom
The fire it rages
It burns clear in the night
Illuminates the path before us
Now true our arrows strike
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising against you
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising against you
The fire it rages
It burns clear in the night
Illuminates the path before us
Now true our arrows strike
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many

Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all
Defy, for we are many
Rising to crush you
Now the tide is turning
Our might striking fear
Our passion foretells our triumph
Smite those who stand against us
Defy, we heed the call
Defy, strengthen us all

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
BB4Christ Theres no way that this song has any Christian connotation, not trying to start a flame war or anything by the way. Maybe if you want to warp the lyrics to a Christian value set as you did, but from listening to other songs by All That Remains theres no way its religious in any sense.
Case and point My Indictment off of The Fall of Ideals. The breakdown is as follows
This is my indictment of your beliefs This is my indictment of what you hold dear
My eyes have seen the horrors that you Commit in the name of your god Your god is violence Your god is unholy Your god is violence Your god is unholy
All That Remains points out how evil the church has become, from the crudades to their lack of action taken in the rampant cases of pedophilia that exists in the clergy. Not to mention their disgusting fear mongering tactics that all lead back to the one thing that the church is truly after which is money.
ANYWAYS the songs fucking amazing and in my opinion one of All That Remains' best.
That is not what Indictment is about, it's about the terrorists in iraq. There god is unholly by "making" them feel that doing what they did is right. And the your god is vioence is more or less the same as the last the previous line,
Dude, you talk about how he warped the meaning of the words, you just did the same thing. Its talking about extremists in Iraq. Not only that, but I hope you know that a few members of the band are Christian, which if you take a closer look at their songs, you'll see alot of their songs stem from Christian influence. Maybe not in a worshipping God sense, but in Christian value sense. Alot of there songs talk about core Christian values, and in result, alot of their songs are oddly very positive, which is uncommon in metal bands that don't fall under the Christian Metal label. Plus you could also say that almost the total lack of profanity in the band is caused by the Christian influence within the band.
From what I've heard in interviews, Phil, their main lyricist, is not strictly Christian. I believe he was raised in a Christian background, but his views sounded more agnostic, but with values that may also be present in Christianity.

I personally think their songs have nothing to do with religion whatsoever. (Well obviously Indictment does, but I'm saying generally.) I think they're more about the power of people. How we have power within us, and a lot of this album sounds like getting people as a whole to band together against tyrants and the other shit in the world. To be strong and prevail for ourselves. No gods included.

But truthfully, I doubt this song is strictly about Christianity as the other guy was saying.
I spoke to Phil! He's not a Christian. :D
