In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
I can be your best friend, I've got good intentions,
but she's got her heart set all over him.
A guy like me? chyeah! she's the prom queen,
and I'm just that someone that she sees.
So put your guard up I don't care,
because this year she's coming home with me.
So tell your friends, yeah don't wait up,
don't wait up it's easy
You've got these hands shakin,
heart racing out of a mess.
And i'ts aching now,
so this holiday just hear me out
We're gonna swing oh!
We're gonna take this city and run.
We're gona fight this fight, and dance all summer long
She cries, I'm forever staying young
And they said kid you'll never make it in this town whoa oh
and it's in the looks she wears that has me second guessing,
got me messing around.
I'll call you out and put on a show,
I'd say you don't even know.
No you don't even know,
and if I dont then I never will.
Heartbeat outta my chest,
and it's aching now.
So this holiday just hear me out,
cause this feeling's gotta get me outta this town.
We're gonna swing oh!
We're gonna take this city and run.
We're gona fight this fight, and dance all summer long
She cries, I'm forever staying young
and we'll wait all summer to play our record,
this feeling inside that we never will.
And you're telling the story again and it sounds like a warning,
oh you feel it you feel it
We're gonna swing oh!
We're gonna take this city and run.
We're gona fight this fight, and dance all summer long
She cries, I'm forever staying young
but she's got her heart set all over him.
