This Bitter Earth/On the Nature of Daylight Lyrics
Well, what fruit it bears
Ooooh, This bitter earth
oooh that hides the glow of a rose
What good am I
Heaven only knows
Yes, can be so cold
Today you're young
Too soon, you're old
But while a voice within me cries
I'm sure someone may answer my call
And this bitter earth
Ooooh may not
Oh be so bitter after all
Lord, This bitter earth
Mmmm that no one shares
And if my life is like the dust
Oooh that hides the glow of a rose
Heaven only knows

I originally heard Max Richter's "On the nature of daylight", played in a film called Disconnect, which I watched recently. Only now have I heard this version, with Dinah Washington singing. I don't have words to describe it. It doesn't make me happy, and it doesn't make me sad. It makes me, emotionless. It doesn't make me think, it makes me stop, and almost get lost in time for just a moment. It makes me feel empty. But it's a kind of, beautiful feeling all the same. It makes me want to cry, yet I cant seem to. Im sad more people haven't heard this song, because if we all stopped for a moment, to hear this, the world would be a better place. I cant describe it, but if I had to, it would be simply, and utterly, beautiful.

Amazing song. Heard it at the end of Shutter Island and it was excellent.

I too heard this for the first time at the end of Shutter Island. I much prefer the version played at the end of the film, to the one that Dinah Washington originally did... I am right in saying the backing track (composed score) is different? From what I remember anyway.
Beautiful song and it does make you feel quite a bit of emotion, not just because it reminds you of the film but the lyrics are so beautiful and honest. It's as if it is a prayer to God from a person that doubts themselves and doesn't have much faith left.
