What You Know Lyrics

In a few weeks
I will get time
To realise it's right before my eyes
And I can take it if it's what I want to do

I am leaving
This is starting to feel like
It's right before my eyes
And I can taste it
It's my sweet beginning

And I can tell just what you want
You don't want to be alone
You don't want to be alone
And I can't say it's what you know
But you've known it the whole time
Yeah, you've known it the whole time

Maybe next year
I'll have no time
To think about the questions to address
Am I the one to try to stop the fire?

I wouldn't test you
I'm not the best you could have attained
Why try anything?
I will get there
Just remember I know

And I can tell just what you want
You don't want to be alone
You don't want to be alone
And I can't say it's what you know
But you've known it the whole time
Yeah, you've known it the whole time

And I can tell just what you want
You don't want to be alone
You don't want to be alone
And I can't say it's what you know
But you've known it the whole time
Yeah, you've known it the whole time

I see it as the speaker is breaking up with their lover. Over the course of their relationship they had realized that the two of them aren't meant for each other. The only thing that they share and has kept them together is their mutual fear of being alone. The singer sees this reality as something bleak and while the singer wishes it wasn't the case, they have come to accept it and have finally decided to end their relationship for both the singer and their lover's benefit.

What really troubles the singer is that their partner may not want to accept that interpretation of their relationship, but the singer is nearly certain their partner knows it's true too, but their partner is hurt by the singers thoughts and won't reciprocate the singer's notions. This shadow of doubt makes the singer's decision even more difficult, but they re-firm their position by insisting over and over that their partner knows this must happen too.

My Interpretation

@hafadai Alex said in an interview that there are only two songs about love on the album, come back home and cigarettes in the theatre so i dont think this is correct.

It just dawned on me that this song might actually be implying a passage of time, which makes it make a lot more sense!

"In a few weeks I will get time To realize it's right before my eyes And I can take it if it's what I want to do"

Initial feelings about asking the girl out! He doubts himself, but he's plucking up the courage and he wants to do it. And then, "a few weeks" later rolls around...

"I am leaving This is starting to feel like It's right before my eyes And I can taste it It's my sweet beginning"

He's going to finally approach her, he's finally reached that point of courage, and he's hopeful and ready.

"And I can tell just what you want You don't want to be alone"

He understands, now, that this girl is horribly lonely and he wants to fill that gap in her life because he loves her, but he flakes out because he doesn't think he's capable of doing that for her.

"Maybe next year I'll have no time To think about the questions to address"

The next year rolls around, and he's aware that it's getting late in the game and she's still plagued with loneliness that's eating her up. He still entertains the idea of trying to be there for her ("Am I the one to try to stop the fire?")

"I wouldn't test you I'm not the best you could have attained Why try anything? I will get there Just remember I know"

Again, he gives up, because he thinks he's not good enough for her and that someone else would give her what she really needs. He thinks he should just not bother, but he stops himself, and convinces himself that maybe one day in the future he'll finally bring himself to try for real (again), and to remind her that out of everyone, he wants to her to know that he is aware and cares about her suffering ("Just remember I know...")

Also, from the way he sings, it doesn't seem resentful or bitter, but very sweet and sincere. Hence, why I believe he's a compassionate person who badly wants to help the person he cares about, but just doesn't have the balls/thinks he's good enough lmao.

Thought that I could somehow get the hang of the song meaning from my situation. It's about the decision of someone to leave the relationship after knowing it's no point in continuing that ('cause she's not good for him)

The first 2 graphs tell about the present. Though he still feels bad but eager to start a new life without her, realizing a brighter path to follow (maybe a better girl?) & believes in the success "In a few weeks I will get time To realize it's right before my eyes And I can take it if it's what I want to do

I am leaving This is starting to feel like It's right before my eyes And I can taste it It's my sweet beginning"

Then he talks about the relationship between them. It's somewhat like a one-sided love because she took advantage of him just because she just didnt wanna be alone. "And I can tell just what you want You don't want to be alone

Now he knows it, he doubts if she knew it in the first place (that she only wanted to have someone by her side) "And I can't say it's what you know"

he talked to himself it was the bitter truth, she didnt love him, just used him. "But you've known it the whole time Yeah, you've known it the whole time"

He doesnt wanna stay as the underdog any longer so he decided to be the one to leave the relationship first. He positively thinks about the future, he will be far away, busy with his new life & not care about her anymore (while she's likely to miss him) "Maybe next year I'll have no time To think about the questions to address Am I the one to try to stop the fire?"

Lastly, he asks her to find a better one & tells her that he'll be fine. "I'm not the best you could have attained Why try anything? I will get there"

"Just remember I know" is a bridge to the chorus... he wants to reminds her that he knows what she did to him.

The repeated chorus is like one more time he blames her for using him for such a long time: Though it (she didnt love him) is "What she knows" but she kept silent and then hurt him so much.

One Awesome Song, Seems to me thats it about a guy who knows that a girl likes him and he wants to be with her too, but he doesn't have time to be with her, hence the in a few weeks time.

I think hafadai is spot on.

I agree with violetmelodies but i feel like it's more of a slow realization that the singer is coming to rather than some specific moment or incident that led him to where he is now, comtemplating whether he should or shouldn't leave the relationship.

you guys have never been in this position? i mean its pretty blunt its more about being in a relationship going nowhere because she doesnt know what she wants or thats what she leads you to believe, its that knowing what you want and you can taste it but is it really worth all the trouble to finally achieve it if ya know what i mean idk thats my spin on things

To me it seems like he is talking about this girl he's always wanted and she has always said no, or didn't feel the same way, and now she finally says yes for some reason or another, maybe its cause he's getting more famous. And he still wants to be with her, but he feels her to be just using him "Just" to have a boyfriend. That's what I think, but yeah.

i think this song is about a relationship, but i don't think its one that's going nowhere. i believe that this song is about a guy who isn't good enough for the girl he's dating and they are both aware of it. she is only with him still because she doesn't want to be alone. for whatever reason he is not good enough for her, he is trying to fix this problem, but they are getting into an argument that he is procrastinating doing whatever it is that he needs to do.

idk, just my interpretation i could also agree with other interpretations on this page, but this just seems to me to fit better

My Interpretation

I disagree. His new beginning is her. She's right before his eyes and it has taken him a long time to reach the moment where he has the courage to reach for what he's wanted for a very long time. He believes she is better than he, and his feelings of being unworthy have kept him doubting his ability to be with her. He believes she must be lonely if she wants him (hence his low self-esteem and doubt).

THANK YOU! I think your interpretation is the closest and most accurate. I have a very similar theory as well.

He mentions realizing "It's right before my eyes" which means he acknowledges he has feelings for this girl. The only thing that stopping him is cold feet. He's wondering if he will have the time to put into a relationship (Maybe next year, I'll have no time, To think about the questions to address) or if she will end up searching for someone "better" than him (I wouldn't test you, I'm not the best you could have attained Why try...

For those thinking it's about breaking up with your lover....

Singer/guitarist Alex Trimble explained the song's meaning to Spinner: "The song was written about touring... the lifestyle that we lead and the people that we left behind, through the fragility of our business that we're in. It's so fickle and you don't know where you're going to be in a few years time, but yet you're giving up so much to be in this position."

Though as a listener myself, I always interpreted the song as the protag of the story (singer) not having the courage to confess his love for a girl and she always seemed to get away. He knows she doesn't want to be alone (maybe they've been friends for a while or are even best friends), but he doesn't wanna ruin things by taking the next step.
