Undercover Martyn Lyrics
She spoke words of wisdom
To the basement people, to the basement
Many surprises await you
In the basement people, in the basement
Sick in the car seat, 'cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission
You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
Sick in the car seat, 'cause you're not up to going
Out on the main streets, completing your mission

Go to 1 min 25 secs... tells you the meaning of this song. Guess we were all wrong :P

She spoke words that would melt in your hands She spoke words of wisdom
- Music world is full of promises, hopes, dreams, and success and those selling it speak such words of wisdom.
To the basement people, to the basement Many surprises await you In the basement people, in the basement
- Lets get to work to make those dreams come true, "To the basement" - Northern Band ; P - We have basements that are great for writing and playing music. "Many surprises await you" Could be the music they create or the lack of success or the realized success. All surprises good n bad.
You hid there last time, you know we're gonna find you
- If your good they will find you... Even in your hidden lil basement.
Sick in the car seat, 'cause you're not up to going
- Nerves!! You are making it now but your not in the privacy of the basement. Your public, playing in front of others. Anxiety before a gig.
Out on the main streets, completing your mission
- The goal was to be popular to be famous to be known and appreciated for what you do. So your out there. Nerves or not Your doing what you set out to do.

This song is about one of the band mates girlfriend. She said they were going to make it big, hence the lyric "she spoke words that would melt in your hands, she spoke words of wisdom." But the lyric i don't get is "to the basement people, to the basement. many suprises await you." any thoughts?
Maybe the band used to practise in the basement (making them basement people?), and the surprises which awaited them were the surprises of making it big...

i actually adore this song, and this band.

This song is about Alex Trimbles' sisters boyfriend, Martyn

It probably does have to do with the sister's boyfriend, I think it's about some guys who have a friend (say, Martyn) who likes a girl whose, "words... will melt in your hand," and, "spoke words of wisdom." These guys try to get Martyn to talk to her/make a move, which is his mission. Unfortunately, he always wimps out, opting to hide in the basement, making, "many surprises await you," sarcastic.
My two cents.

The line "she spoke words that would melt in your hands" made me think of a little kid. Every once in a while they'll say something that just makes you melt, and it's unusual how wise it is. The kid is playing a game where she's on a mission, and she's hiding from her parents because she doesn't want to go out. And I'm not really sure they say car seat... But if they do, that just strengthens my theory.

your theory angers me a little. because it makes sense.. and i was hoping that the song would hold a deeper meaning then that. i mean technically the song means whatever you take from it, but still that theory holds a lot of sense :/

i always liked to think of "words that would melt in your hands" and "words of wisdom" meant like her words were cold hearted but true. like she spoke harsh words. idk, i feel like if thats the case the meaning is a lot deeper than just a kid playing games. i guess i should't...

Thats actually weird Cuz i got the same vibe about it being about a little kid but "words that would melt in your hands" and "words of wisdom" were Harsh words from the kids mother and so the kid goes and hides in the basement. Really Really good song though. The Band kinda reminds me of Minus the Bear and Death Cab For Cutie

@Hyperslasher1 lyric meanings are personal to you, it doesent even really matter what it was written about, its your interpretation of it

So this is just completely my own interpretation. I just got back from a mission trip and in lots of countries you cannot have open religious views and this song seemed to fit so perfectly. "She spoke words that would melt in your hand, she spoke words of wisdom" Makes me think of a missionary sharing the gospel to people who have never heard it before. "To the basement people to the basement, many surprises await you" You have to be secretive when sharing the gospel, it can be dangerous so they would meet in basements so when the police came they wouldn't find them. In the first stance it sounds exciting. New stories and ideas of God await you in the basement. "You hid there last time you know we are going to find you" The police know they are in the basement. They know about their hiding place "sick in the car sick cause your not up for going out on the main streets completing your mission" The missionary knows the risk involved. They are risking their lives and the lives of their friends or family In the next verse when it repeats "to the basement people to the basement, many surprises await you" I picture the police coming and they know they are caught "you hid there last time you know we're going to find you" I know it's a song about Undercover Martyn but I picture Undercover Martyr. Completely my own thoughts-not influenced by the band

it's fab :D

Love it, such a cheery song ... can't help but smile every time I listen to it.
Just makes me wanna get up and dance.
i really agree with you on that, it sounds so happy
