Anxiety of treachery, wary of the interloper
Never from the circle, the kindred you've confided in

Always from the stranger, is what you would believe?
Cold-blooded betrayal, something not easily forgotten.

Envy was the poisonous effect, flowing through your veins
Of what you should not covet, cowardly distain
You talked all your shit, you couldn't help yourself
Wanting to divulge, craving to share your exploit
Greed in being the king, naive of the penalty

Reveling secrets, proceeded to deceive
Never seen it coming blinded by camardine

Trust an afterthought, of what would not occur
Reflection powers fury, dominating need to act

Angst of retribution, only fleeting thought dismissed
Desire for revenge, strengthening resolve

Fleeing for respite, antagonism boiling over
Settling at hand, consider your life
Forfeit in every way, repugnance in my sight

Bash your fucking head in; don't feel that will be enough
Mesmerizing in your pain, salt the wound that burdened me
Your suffering is justified, afflict as much as i can bring
Contemplating what you've earned, all this anguish you deserve

Must prolong your agony, persecution cruelty
Carving you up like a pig, warranted distress you live
Vindicated mind-set spreads, all over me like gusting wind
Don't distress because I'm not done, we'll start all over later as one

Your back-stabbing morals have taken away my life
My conduct in your torture must make it worth it
Haven't thought out this process I've undertaken
Extend you affliction I'll work to keep you aware

Wide awake your torment makes me think of how you act
The all-embracing jealousy hidden surging in your shell
No suspicion on you, loved to play the game of loyalty
Misery saturates all know to find me satisfied

There will be no peace for me now
Distrust for anyone I'll ever encounter
Your treachery will die with you

This is my interpretation of Your Treachery Will Die with You:

Anxiety of treachery [guilt] [Guilty & anxious] Wary of the interloper [an intruder] Never from the circle ["Interloper"s are never from a group of friends/family.] The kindred you've confided in [You confide in your blood-relatives.]

Always from the stranger Is what you would believe? [You choose to believe relative strangers over your close friends/family. Where is the logic in that?] Cold-blooded betrayal; [Either "the stranger" or the audience ("you") betrays you or your close friends/family, respectively. In the latter circumstance, you betrayed your close friends/family by choosing to believe "the stranger"/"interloper" instead of your close friends &/or family.] Something not easily forgotten [This "betrayal" is not forgotten, & itches at the betrayed.]

Envy was the poisonous effect [The betrayed became envious of "the stranger"/"interloper", because you chose to believe "the stranger" & not your close friends & family.] Flowing through your veins Of what you could not covet [yearn to possess (something belonging to someone else)].

Cowardly disdaiN [I can't figure out if this is a verb or a noun. n. the feeling that someone/something is unworthy of one's consideration/respect. v. consider/reject with disdain] [The betrayed (your close friends &/or family) disdain "the stranger".] You talked all your shit - You couldn't help yourself; Wanting divulge, Craving every exploit. [The betrayed are airing "the stranger"'s dirty laundry & trying to poison others against "the stranger".] Greed in being the king, Naive of the penalty [Now I'm a bit lost. I don't know who they're refering to in line 17 & 18 (However, I think the greedy one ("the [']king[']") does not think of the consequences of their greediness &/or wrong-doings.]

Reveling secrets Proceeded to deceive [The betrayed continue their 'poisoning' against "the stranger".] Never seen it coming [Who didn't see what coming? :s] Blinded by camardine [What's "camardine"??]

Trust an afterthought Of what would not occur. [What would not occur?] Reflection powers fury, Dominating need to act. [The betrayeds' reflection of how they were betrayed fuels their fury & makes them want to act on their anger.]

Angst [profound feeling of generalized anxiety] of retribution [punishment inflicted in the spirit of moral outrage or personal vengeance] [The betrayed are very eager to take revenge for their hurt.] Only fleeting thought dismissed [I do not know what the above line insinuates.] Desire for revenge Strengthening resolve [firm determination] [The betrayed are eager for revenge. . .]

Fleeing for respite [a short period of relief from something unpleasant] [I am unsure of who flees or why they flee. . .] Antagonism boiling over Settling at hand Consider your life Forfeit in every way Repugnance [intense disgust] in my sight

Bash your fucking head in - Don't feel that will be enough Mesmirizing in your pain Salt the wound that burdened me [The above 4 lines are the betrayed taking revenge on "the stranger" &/or "you". The above line entails the betrayed putting salt in a figuritive wound (which is meant to hurt really badly). This figuritive wound has affected the writer badly.] Your suffering is justified - Afflict as much as I can bring! Contemplating what you've earned [=-?] All this anguish you deserve! [>=)] [Revenge continued. . .]

Must prolong your agony [Revenge continued. . . This person's angry, neh?] Persecution cruelty Carving you up like a pig Warranted [justfied] distress you live in Vindicated [shown to be right] mind-set spreads All over me like gusting wind. [The betrayed are justifying their violent acts of revenge.] Don't distress, because I'm not done - We'll start all over later as one. [Revenge continued. . .]

Your back-stabbing morals have taken away my life. [I imagine this is the person the betrayed have taken revenge on that is speaking (The revenge costed the victim their life) OR The betrayed have realized they have been completely consumed by revenge - It's consumed every second of their life!] My conduct in your torture must make it worth it. Haven't thought out this process I've undertaken [The person taking revenge is 'crossing the bridge when they come to it'. They're basically deciding how to torture their victim as they go.] Extend your affliction. I'll work to keep you aware. [The person taking revenge continues & worsens their victim's suffering & torture. The person taking revenge wants to make sure their victim is aware of it all.]

Wide awake, your torment makes me think of how you act. The all-embracing jealousy hidden, surging in your shell No suspicion on you Loved to play the game of loyalty [The above three lines reminds me of Gollum & Frodo's relationship in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Gollum eventually embraces his jealousy of Frodo for being the keeper of the Ring, & he hides it & manages to hide his jealousy, continuing to play the loyal 'puppy'.] Misery saturates - All know to find me satisfied. [The person taking revenge is miserable, but is satisfied in it.]

There will be no peace for me now; Distrust for anyone I'll ever encounter. [The person who has taken their revenge (aka the betrayed) now has to live with their distrust for anyone & everyone around them.] Your treachery [betrayal/deception] will die with you. [Only when the betrayee passes away is the betrayal/deception forgiven.]

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
