She was looking for more
than just a good time
She needed a ramblin' man
To make her feel alive
In the streets of her heart
Someone had arrived
The Golden God of her dreams
with blank porcelain eyes

Sunken in the master's chair
Lord Gold's face - A blank survey

the fullest flush
the sweetest surrender,
Pay attention as he pours..
you can't ignore
blood, stars and wine

Expose your heart
Show me where you're weak
kneel and beg
for my healing
Obsession sinks in
you want more and more
of my wand of unyielding

Open. Your. Heart.
to. the. world.
Bare. your. Soul.
To. Your. Lord.

Expose your heart
Show me where you're weak
kneel and beg
for my healing
Obsession sinks in
you want more and more
of my wand of unyielding

Lord Gold feeds from your orifices
and he wants to see you sweat
Lord Gold probes you publicly
and makes your pussy wet

now say his name.....

LORD GOLD

Nathan (the singer) has said that the more unassuming, the song is the more tortured it probably is deep down. So I doubt it's about sex.

In the documentary Earth Tour, Nathan talks about his cousin who died of heroin abuse. Perhaps the wand is a metaphor for heroin, and how the girl simply can't get enough? This makes the "she was looking for more than just a good time" lyric make sense as well...

Oh, and Big Business is NOT about sex. At all. It's about Ed Edge, a close friend of HORSE the band's who has been with them since the early days.

no comments? WOW. hmm. probably one of my favorites. i love it. i was listening to my iPod on shuffle, and Lord Gold Throneroom came on, and i was listening to the lyrics. then this some came on next, and i was listening to the lyrics of this song.. they use "Sunken in the master's chair. Lord Gold's face - A blank survey" in each song.... i'm just throwing it out there, something i saw in both songs.

anyone want to go deeper into the song? i'm not that good at defining lyrics.... but yeah. great song. :D

I'm pretty sure that the wand is lord gold's dick. (funny because big business is about the same thing, except a different person). Blah blah, some girl is becoming obsessed with having sex with a star, or maybe just putting men/aman on pedestals in general. I think that she eventually catches on that he is an empty man with weird, almost anti-emotions, and that the next two songs tie in.

My original idea about the second half of the album was some sort of prostitution ring that lord gold runs, but I haven't been able to analyze everything together. I'm not really all that sure, but all of the songs after shapeshifter tie into each other smoothly.

This song actually features "his purple majesty" which on a natural death had the song with the woman sobbing in it.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
