I’ve put on something you can’t switch off.
I hope I don’t cry, but I know I will and you know how it feels.
On the north side, on the south side, they sing along when you switch on.
You switch on for the city, long gone from the city, come on strong winds move on.
You belong in the city, I’m wrong for the city, switch on a sad song when I’m gone.
When in New York, I stay indoors, go into the city and switch up the pity.
On the train someone says something about how Jesus saves.
But I’m too lost to be found, and put on a good face when I wasn’t around.
On the east side, on the west side, they sing a long when you switch on.
They sing along when you switch on
You switch on for the city, long gone from the city, come on strong winds move on.
You belong in the city, I’m wrong for the city, switch on a sad song when I’m gone.

Song MeaningI think this song is about him going to jail. He states " Go into the city and switch up the pity" meaning instead of him pitying other people people are pitying him. plus, he says that "When in New York, I stay indoors" meaning he is confined indoors, on house arrest.

General CommentThis is definitely my favorite song on the album. I'm surprised there aren't way more comments!

I'm usually someone that doesn't like to liken every song to relationships, but to me, it seems like a Green Acres type relationship where one person loves the city and the other doesn't. He's saying how she belongs in the city while he can't even manage to take a train in the city without people noticing how miserable he is.

Theyre breaking up, and he's knows how sad it'll be, but he just can't handle city life. Like the winds of change moving them apart.
