There is no way I'm looking for a boyfriend
There is no way I'm looking for a scene
I need to save some dough
I'm a working girl, you know
I'll fend attention off I keep to myself

I love my room, I'm getting used to sleeping
Some nights I really like to lie awake
I hear the midnight birds
The message in their words
The dawn will touch me in a way a boy could never touch
Their promise never meant so much to me

You have been warned, I'm warned to be contrary
Backward at school, I wrote from right to left
Teacher never cared for me
Preacher said a prayer for me
God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get

I sit for hours just waiting for his phone call
I'll leave the chocolate hidden in the fridge
I'll play his messages
Analyze his intonation
Please stop me there, I'm even boring myself

I think of him when I'm doing the dishes
I think of him while looking in the sink
This ain't no play on words
My love for him is absurd
If he gave me a sign I'd think about it for a week
I'd build it up and then I'd turn him down

You have been warned, I'm warned to be contrary
Backward at school, I wrote from right to left
Teacher never cared for me
Preacher said a prayer for me
God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get

    My Interpretation
I actually think it's saying just the opposite. She's saying she likes being single, she doesn't feel the need for a man in her life, but that's an anomaly in this world. You're viewed as awkward and abnormal if you're a women and your world doesn't revolve around a man. She's been "warned to be contrary" by her teachers and religious leaders, even though her lifestyle is not hurting anyone. That's why I like the line "Preacher said a prayer for me, God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get..." Because it's ironic when you consider that she just previously stated that she's doing just fine by herself. It's everyone else that has a problem.

Let me guess a girl is avoiding the fact she is in love by providing excuses and trying to tell herself she likes to be alone. IDK but the last time I over-analyzed everything a guy I was seeing did or said, he turned out to be completely deceiving...maybe it's for a reason? Hmmm?

    My Interpretation
I'm taking that verse where she waits for a guy's phone calls as some kind of sarcasm. As in this is what she sees other people doing and she imagines herself doing that for a little bit but... "please stop me there, I'm even boring myself." And she also entertains the idea of being in love with someone, not a real person, just a what-if scenario, but she can already see how it would end "If he gave me a sign / I'd think about it for a week / I'd build it up and then I'd turn him down" This dating and relationship stuff is just not for her. She's "contrary". She's not one to let other people dictate to her what she is supposed to be doing. Preachers disapprove of her flouting society's rules. A woman uninterested in getting a man? Unthinkable! She must be possessed by the devil! "God help the girl, she needs all the help she can get!"

Not sure, but sounds like a misfit girl (or at least that's how she views herself) who is crazy about some guy. She's warning him that she can be difficult, not acting 'normally' when it comes to dealing with her emotions. But what do I know...
