We often asked my honest friend
If we'd hold on tight till the end
Your knowing smile just breaks me down
And leaves fighting words in my mouth
I will light you up, I will light you up

For you and I, love was a fire escape
For you and I, lived on broken faith
For you and I , today is not the ending
Today is not the ending you would like

Without these lights to lead us home
We're just drifting blind out here alone
What we forgive, what we forget
I'll be a martyr in your background whispering words of faithfulness
I will light you up...

For you and I, love was a fire escape
For you and I, lived on broken faith
For you and I, stood tall until the ending
Today is not the ending you would like

Now the silence chokes, talk to me my friend
Am I not a victim, tell me why I should pretend
When the silence breaks, faces in the room
People gaping wide-eyed, at the space from me to you
People gaping wide eyed, at the space from me to you

For you and I, love was a fire escape
For you and I, lived on broken faith
For you and I, stood tall until the ending
Today is not the ending you would like...

This song is so beautiful; I'm honored to be the first one to leave a comment on it. To me it speaks of a great love that is ending - the relationship my be ending, but the love isn't, if that makes sense. He'll always have great memories of her, and what she meant to him.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
