Stevie Lyrics
Everybody wanted to be her
She chose her friends as carefully as she chose her words
She was so sure about it all
Had all the things I'd never touch
She wrote in sterling silver with a ballpoint pen
Cold blooded chameleon
Why can't you see
You're a god to me
Why can't you see
You're a god to me
Not sure really worth saving
Alcatraz has nothing on her after all this time
Still I didn't search behind those eyes
Oh you're as tight lipped as a bottle all screwed
If I had the chance to peer inside your mind
Give up your mystery, why think twice
Why can't you see
You're a god to me
Why can't you see
You're a god to me
You're a good friend of mine
How the sober are
Thirsty for the sweet wine
Got to open up, lay herself on the line (lay herself on the line)
You're a good friend of mine
How the sober are
Thirsty for the sweet wine
Got to open up, lay herself on the line (lay herself on the line)
You're a good friend of mine
How the sober are
Thirsty for the sweet wine
Why can't you see
You're a god to me
Why can't you see
Oh give in to me

when i first heard this song i thought it was a bout a boy. but now ive read the lyrics i realise its a girl/woman not 100% sure what its about but ive always admired lisa's lyrical writing so im sure its some special

It seems to be about a friend who she idolises because of her mystery.

I always thought it was about someone she knew in school,
someone who she really admired because she seemed to have it all,
but who she later found out was going through some difficult stuff ?
I dunno..... just an idea

I heard her talking on the radio about it, and its about one of her friends who she was friends with for a very long time and then they had a falling out and she wrote this song about her to show her how much she means to her.

the lyrics are actually:
Stevie was a connoisseur, Everybody wanted to be her, She chose her friends just as carefully, As she chose her words, She was so sure about it all.
Oh, Stevie was a hero once, Had all the things I'd never touched, She wrote in sterling silver, With a ballpoint pen, A cold-blooded chameleon.
Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, You're a god to me. Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, You're a god to me.
Stevie was an ice maiden, Naturally worth saving, Alcatraz has nothing on her, After all this time, Still a dead-end search behind those eyes.
Oh, Stevie where you going to, Oh, you're as tight-lipped as a bottle screw, But if I had the chance, To peer inside your mind, And give up your mystery, I'd think twice.
Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, You're a god to me. Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, You're a god to me.
Tea leaves in the cup, You're a good friend of mine, How the sober are thirsty, For the sweet wine.
Oh, now that Stevie has locked her keys in her mind, Oh, got to open up, Lay heself on the line (lay herself on the line).
Tea leaves in the cup, You're a good friend of mine, How the sober are thirsty, For the sweet wine.
Oh, now that Stevie has locked her keys in her mind (in her mind), Oh, got to open up, Lay heself on the line (oh, lay herself on the line).
Tea leaves in the cup, You're a good friend of mine, How the sober are thirsty, For the sweet wine.
Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, You're a god to me. Oh, Stevie, oh, Stevie, Why can't you see, Oh, give in to me.

Yes i think this song is about someone who lisa knew who seemed to be perfect in every way but as she got to know the girl more she began to realise that she wasnt as perfect as she seemed.

This song is beautiful and one of my favourites on the album. its really sweet and reminds me of a friend i had named Stevie, of whom i also had a falling out with.
So whenever i listen to this song it reminds me of her.
Basically, its about a girl Lisa was friends with, someone Lisa obviously idolised, but they had a falling out and she misses her.
"Tea leaves in the cup, you're a good friend of mine" - she's sure there's no doubt about it. "How the sober are thirsty for the sweet wine" - she misses her friend now she's no longer there. Wine is a metaphor for Stevie and sober is Stevie's absence.
That sounds about right. A friend of mine is friends with stevie (person in this song). What you've said is correct, but interestingly enough, they're friends again (Lisa and Stevie that is).

i remember lisa saying at a gig that she had a falling out with her best friend and that's what this song was about. i think they were best friends but the friend got really protective especially after she became famous and she suddenly had a lot of new friends. it sounds like stevie just stopped talking to her all of a sudden and lisas trying to tell her that she still holds their friendship in high regard. it sounds like stevie is a very conservative friend and didnt approve.

When I saw her in London last year she said it was about her ex best friend but she chaned the name so she didn't know it was about her, those were exactly her words

So... nobody thinks this song could be about Stevie Nicks..? I'd always had a hunch. It's probably wrong. Just an idea.
Stevie Nicks was the first thing I thought of after hearing this song. I reckon it's totally about her.. Everything about the Stevie character in the song totally screams Stevie Nicks:
Stevie Nicks was the first thing I thought of after hearing this song. I reckon it's totally about her.. Everything about the Stevie character in the song totally screams Stevie Nicks:
-"Stevie was a connoisseur" = of music! An expert at what she does, the finest.
-"Stevie was a connoisseur" = of music! An expert at what she does, the finest.
-"Everybody wanted to be her" = Stevie's fame in the past particularly.
-"Everybody wanted to be her" = Stevie's fame in the past particularly.
-"She chose her friends as carefully as she chose her words" = being selective about who her friends were due to her fame as well as being an iconic and original songwriter
-"She chose her friends as carefully as she chose her words" = being selective about who her friends were due to her fame as well as being an iconic and original songwriter
-"She was so sure about it all"...
-"She was so sure about it all" = her confidence
-"Oh Stevie was a hero once" = her past influence on the music world as a figure
-"Had all the things I'd never touch" = Stevie's huge fame and success as an icon, while Lisa is more low key albeit successful
-"She wrote in sterling silver with a ballpoint pen" = her incredible lyrics contrasted the simplicity of a simple instrument
-"Cold blooded chameleon" = the stark deliverance of her powerful words through her powerful voice maybe, regardless of the ever changing messages?
-"Oh Stevie, oh Stevie, Why can't you see You're a god to me" = Her huge influence as a figure, songwriter, singer, performer, a human to Lisa
-"Stevie was an ice maiden, Not sure really worth saving" = Her hardened personality
>
-"Still I didn't search behind those eyes" = perceiving the meaning behind her personality or songs and how hard it is to do, daunting perhaps.
-"Oh Stevie where are you going to, Oh you're as tight lipped as a bottle all screwed" = once again about her secrecy and mystery surrounding her. Also makes another comparison of Stevie and wine that comes later in the song.
-"If I had the chance to peer inside your mind, Give up your mystery, why think twice" = Lisa wishes she knew what makes Stevie tick, the mystery behind her apparent genius, she would not blink to know the answers
-"Tea-leaves in the cup, You're a good friend of mine, How the sober are, Thirsty for the sweet wine" = To me this could mean: Lisa compares herself to tea. She says tea leaves in a cup are a goo friend of hers, probably being her only accompaniment to the lonely songwriting process of creation for her. She compares "the sober" to Stevie, the wine that she is and drinks in contrast to Lisa's sober song process that is tame and long to write in comparison, that the sober people want the "sweet sweet wine" that is Stevie and her almost magical lyrics that come so naturally to her and intoxicate her audience, including Lisa.
-"Now that Stevie has locked her keys in her mind, Got to open up, lay herself on the line" = That Stevie's songs are deeply personal and by writing and performing them she is revealing part of herself, which is always a hard and risky business. Perhaps Lisa is also addressing herself in this bit.. Saying that she must do similarly and open up to her audience about her own deeply personal life lessons in order to thrive.
...That's all I got!
