He's lovesick and she is either kind of a whore, and he's using metaphor to describe her whoriness, or she's also a musician and on the road, gets lonely, etc. Either way she's not exactly faithful. But he'll wait until she's done being a whore or whatever and she realizes that he's the one for her. He's not getting any younger, in addition to being lovesick, getting older is kind of a sickness in a way, hence he *tried* to stay healthy" for her, as opposed to *trying*. There's really no fighting the disease of age, so he's acknowledging the failure up front. But she's not getting any younger either, so he knows she'll come to him eventually. And she will, he seems very sure about that. They are she and he and so it is.
