I Am Young Lyrics

i am young but not for long
i dont know how long im gone
pick me up, take me back, put me down

i am old but not for long
you told me just sail it home
pick me up, take me back, put me down
pick me up, bring me back, and turn me around

pick me up, take me back, put me down
tell me why, tell me why, tell me why
tell me why, tell me why

i dont know you and you dont know me
let it go, let it go

i cannot see what you cannot show
i cannot be where you will not go
let me go, let me go

i dont know you and you dont know me
let it go, let it go

i cannot see what you cannot show
i cannot be where you will not go
i cannot see what you cannot show
i cannot be where you will not go
let me go let me go

Everytime I hear the short instrumental opening to this song, for a split second I think I'm listening to The Beatles' Across the Universe...does anyone else experience that?

Anyway, this is such a great song! I'm assuming that it's about life as a baby and also as an elderly person. With the lines "I am young but not for long. I dont know how long I'm gone. Pick me up, take me back, put me down", which then repeats again with "old" in place of "young" and the second verse changing to "you told me just sail it home", he is certainly making comparisons to the lack of freedom or ability we have at those ages. Inevidably, life will repeat itself.

I think it may be about growing up and living away from your parents maybe boarding school or college and learning new experiences you gain on your own and becoming a person but your parents still see you as their child. just one idea
