Broken glass and cigarettes
Writing on the wall
It was a bargain for the summer
And I thought I had it all
I was the one who gave you everything
The one who took the fall
You were the one who would do anything
The one who can't recall
Where she was while she was sleeping
In another woman's bed
Or the doctors or the lawyers
Or a stranger that she met
If there's nothing I can gain from this
Or anything at all
It'd be the knowledge that you gave me
When I thought I've heard it all

It was a long time with you
It was a long time with me
It'd be a long time for anyone
But looks like it's meant to be

Social class and registers
Cocaine in the hall
All the way from California
On the way to your next call
To those non-negotiations
To simulate a call
For the betterment of evils and your ways around the laws that keep you
Up and sitting pretty
On a pedestal of men
And now you're sleeping like an angel
Near the man who you gave head

If there's something I can make of this
Or anything at all
It'd be the devil hates a loser and you thought you had it all

It was a wrong time for you
It was a wrong time for me
It was the wrong time for everyone
But looks like I'm about to see for myself

If I could go back in time to the place in my soul, there all alone
Lonely tear drops
Ooh, are calling you
But I don't wanna know it now
'Cause knowing you, it won't change a damn thing
But there was a time

Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now

Yeah, there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now

Oh
I would do anything for you
There was a time
I would do anything for you
I would do anything for you
There was a time

There was a time
Oh, I would do anything for you
Oh, I would do anything for you
Yeah there was a time
Didn't wanna know at all
Didn't wanna know at all
I don't wanna know it now
I would do anything for you (didn't wanna know, at all)
(Didn't wanna know, at all, and I don't wanna know it now)

There was a time, was a time

This song is about stephanie seymour, clearly. "It was a bargain for the summer And I thought I had it all" -referring to their happier times together

"I was the one who gave you everything The one who took the fall" -referring to how he idolised her and gave her everthing but was the one left heartbroken by it all,

You were the one who would do anything The one who can’t recall Where she was while she was sleepin' In another women’s bed Or the doctor's or the lawyer's Or the stranger that she met" -she moved on as if he meant nothing. Axl believed she was cheating on him and she was known to be a bed-hopper who would sleep with anyone to get what she wanted.

"Cocaine in the hall All the way from California" -referring to the cocaine party stephanie threw at their house while axlw as in calfornia. he came back to the house and went crazy because stephanies son dylan was upstairs, huge fight followed and stephanie claim axl dragged her feet through broken glass in a rage "Broken glass and cigarettes" resulting in them splitting up.

And your ways around the laws- the way she go away with everything because she was a supermodel

"That keep you up and sitting pretty On a pedestal or bed"- bed has been changed from 'men' again a reference to her supermodel status and how she just looks so pretty but really isnt nice

"And now you're sleeping like an angel"- very cleverly proving he's talking about stephanie. She was one of a few Victoria's secret Angel. "Never mind who gave you head" sung you gave head, her cheating.

"cause knowin' you It won't change a damn thing But there was a time" His teardrops and pain meant nothing to her, she went on and started her happy life with another man.

"There was a time I would do anything for you" explaining how much he loved her, he would have done anything for her.

Axl's own favourite song, my favourite song, absolutely amazing, tells alot

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
