You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset
She's goin' off about somethin' that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do
I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday night
I'm listenin' to the kind of music she doesn't like
And she'll never know your story like I do

But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts
She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreamin' 'bout the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see
You belong with me
You belong with me

Walkin' the streets with you and your worn-out jeans
I can't help thinkin' this is how it ought to be
Laughin' on a park bench, thinkin' to myself
"Hey, isn't this easy?"
And you've got a smile that could light up this whole town
I haven't seen it in a while since she brought you down
You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what you doin' with a girl like that?

She wears high heels, I wear sneakers
She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers
Dreamin' 'bout the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

If you could see that I'm the one who understands you
Been here all along, so why can't you see
You belong with me
Standin' by and waitin' at your back door
All this time, how could you not know, baby
You belong with me
You belong with me

Oh, I remember you drivin' to my house
In the middle of the night
I'm the one who makes you laugh
When you know you're 'bout to cry
And I know your favorite songs
And you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong
Think I know it's with me

Can't you see that I'm the one who understands you?
Been here all along, so why can't you see
You belong with me
Standin' by and waitin' at your back door
All this time, how could you not know, baby
You belong with me
You belong with me
You belong with me
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me
You belong with me

wow i cant believe theres no comments on this song yet. basically, shes in love with her best guy friend, and they have such amazing chemistry she cant understand why he isnt dating her. maybe this other girl is that pretty popular girl, but shes the one who gets him adn knows him and is really there for him. they have a rare friendship, and its so important to her that she spends her time wishing for him rather than moving on. i adore this song.

    Song Meaning

I don't see why everybody is blinded by her nice curly hair.

This boy has obviously upset his girlfriend, who as far as we know is perfectly lovely and volunteers at the hospital. It is automatically assumed that she is awful. Taylor Swift is jealous, and thinks that she knows him better, etc.

That's not necessarily true, the song is from her point of view. The boy clearly likes the other, quite likely prettier and more popular girl. Why should he break her, and his own, heart just to satisfy the whining of an angsty nerd?

The song is catchy. I like it.

    But it's evil.

Why cant boys see when some one is perfect for them? I mean, why do they go for the girls who are jerks?

The lyrics pretty much explain themselves.

She's in love with some guy, probably a really close guy friend ("Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find, what you're looking for has been here the whole time", and other various lines). She knows how much better off he'd be with her, but he's dating a popular girl. She doesn't understand why he'd pick her because she's done nothing but been there for him.

This song is truly amazing, and deserved that VMA. Taylor is amazingly talented, it's unbelievable.

I think the reason she has made it so big is because she is able to capture teen girls lives in songs. She is able to write songs that we can all relate to and it's so amazing

I have a veerrrrrry different interpretation (though somewhat similar to one comment I read). While I've read that this is about Taylor's friend who had a crush on one of her friends, the lyrics seem to suggest that the song is about an extremely jealous girl who is overwhelmingly consumed with her crush--she's obsessed, in other words. Let's break it down, verse by verse...

You're on the phone with your girlfriend she's upset. Shes going off about something that you said Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do (she is convinced that she is the only one who gets him)

I'm in my room its a typical Tuesday night I'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like (even though she doesn't know her, she hates her just for dating her crush) And she'll never know your story like I do (...moving on...)

But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers (using high school stereotypes as metaphors; assumedly, the other girl is pop-uuu-lerr and this girl is average) Dreaming about the day When you wake up and find What you're, looking for has been here the whole time (she's convinced that she is his destiny)

Chorus: If you could see that I'm the one who understands you Been here all along so why can't you see, you You belong with me You belong with me (mostly self-explanatory--she believes that no one else deserves him and that she is better for him than anyone else)

Walking the streets with you and your worn-out jeans I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be Laughing on a park bench, thinking to myself Hey isn't this easy? (her only want is to just be around him and talking to him)

And youve got a smile that could light up this whole town I havent seen it in a while since she brought you down You say youre fine I know you better then that (she believes that his gf has made him miserable) Hey whatcha doing with a girl like that (again, professing her belief that the girl has got the devil in her heart)

She wears high heels I wear sneakers (the shoes are a metaphor for how he would be more comfortable with the sneakers--the singer--than the high heels--la chica mas popular) She's cheer captain and I'm on the bleachers Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

    Chorus, again

Chorus 2: Standing by and waiting at your back door All this time how could you not know (she...stands at his door for hours just waiting for him to come out because...she's a stalker? and yet no one wonders "Who is that girl who keeps standing at the door every day?") Baby you belong with me You belong with me

Oh I remember you driving to my house in the middle of the night I'm the one who makes you laugh When you know you're about to cry And I know your favorite songs And you tell me about your dreams Think I know where you belong Think I know it's with me (this might reveal that they had a previous relationship that didn't work out, but she stubbornly believes that they still should be together; either that, or they were REALLY good friends, if you know what I mean ;-]) (The rest of the song is the chorus, although the "maybe" near the end might reveal that the singer is a little unsure)

So, that's my interpretation. Fangirls, don't hate. I think Taylor Swift is a great artist and I love this song, but it the implications in the lyrics are quite hillarious to me.

Has anyone ever thought that Taylor Swift should move on? If this guy doesn't like her, she should realize it and get with a guy who does. Don't pine away after boys who are interested in girls for shallow reasons like beauty or popularity. You want a guy who likes you for your mind, character, personality and interests, not the way you look. Taylor, and all her sympathizing fans, should get over these low-quality boys.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
