When it comes to me, we're supposedly close friends
But when it comes to you, your cruelty won't bend
It's a strange Paradox, being masochistic
When your lady's Love's super sadistic
Her heart's entwined around another man
Her venomous Love poisoning my lifespan
These bruises and these scrapes still hurt
But it's Agony when his name, she blurts
I stand before you telling, once again
A Tale of a Soul, starved of Love's sweet rain
A desolate Seed, void of nurturing ground
Thirsting for you, your warmth remains unfound
Your sweet attraction was a fatal rush
Cold aftertaste made me number than a slush
Am I really here? I must be a ghost or invisible
I mean, why else ignore Love indivisible
My Cosmic girl, you were my Soul's delight
Gave you my heart, you were lost in his limelight
I thought in my Mind, as it tends to Wander
If we were meant to be, alas, no longer I ponder
Like the, like the slushes do, you had me excited, smiling with ease
Soon, your cold heart gives me a throbbing brain freeze
You whisper 'I Love you,' but I know that ain't True
The words an echo of the oath I naively vowed to you
That Night in the park, the only Souls around
My vows of Love echoed nonstop, without a sound
Am I stupid? Am I just dumb
Am I even here? I must be a ghost or invisible
I mean, why else ignore Love indivisible
My Cosmic Girl, you must be from a Higher Plane
I mean, how else would they deem me completely sane
Sorry, went off on a tangent, like I always go
Thought it'd be just you and me, the Dynamic Duo
Look, I know that all you want is Solitude
Pardon my desire to close what you and I misconstrued
My Cosmic Girl, my Living Daydream
Lies ain't as good as you make them seem
I'll remember you, like all those in the Past
Soul-Bonds are impressions that always last
I'll never stop caring for you
Whether or not I've vanished from your view
You said you still Loved him, so I hung up on you
Went off down a dark 'Allie', and I got mugged
They should hang a warning sign, 'cause that sucked
Am I even here? Am I a ghost or invisible
My Love for you was always indivisible
My Cosmic Girl, Love you

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
