Inner city sky rise over town at night
You pushed me to the top floor
So we could see the sights

I could tell that you wanted to
Jump in the pool, jump in the pool
I looked at you I knew you wanted to
Jump in the pool, jump in the pool

I push out, I breathe in
A stillness turning away
Don't look back, don't pretend
We'll never take control again

We're falling beyond the horizon
And only the water remains
The fear is falling away

On the poolside staring into glowing blue
Swimsuit issues with my toes
Curled in the grooves

I could tell that you wanted to
Jump in the pool, jump in the pool
I looked at you I knew you wanted to
Jump in the pool, jump in the pool

I push out, I breathe in
A stillness turning away
Don't look back, don't pretend
We'll never take control again

And before that we own the horizon
And only the water remains
The fear is falling away

Keep breathing, keep searching, keep holding on
Keep breathing, keep living, keep holding on

I push out, I breathe in
A stillness turning away
Don't look back, don't pretend
We'll never take control again

And before that we own the horizon
And only the water remains
The fear is falling away

this song is absolutely amazing, friendly fires should be far bigger than they are.

i think, to me its about entering a new stage of life...kind of taking the plunge if you like, and not looking back at the things that you've left behind, because its making a fresh start. 'fear is falling away' - not being scared about doing it etc. very very very awesome song :)

I may be completely off the mark but I hear it as if saying 'I knew you wanted to jump in the pool' is a euphemism for something more... something someone or two people wanted to do but they didn't... but the moment has since passed.

    The song is absolutely beautiful.

I feel like the meaning of the song is both literal and metaphorical. I literally think it's a fun summer song (ie: the second verse) and I also feel like it's also what nehemiah553 said. Describes a moment two people missed. I first heard this song playing at my work and I instantly feel in love with it as well as Friendly Fires. They are incredible.

To me it sounds like it's about two lovers, scared of making the big step to The Real Thing. But they take the plunge together (: They jump in the pool... of looooove. Haha it sounds so stupid, but I think it's like that.

I agree with you nehemiah553... the song to me is... like you said "i knew you wanted to jump in the pool" but they didn't and now they've missed their chance... "I push out, I breath in, and still us turning away" (they tried but failed) "don't look back, don't pretend, we'll never take control again" (no point pretending that they could have done it)... to me it's about a relationship... it didn't work out, she wanted it to work out (hence wanting to jump in the pool) but they both knew that it wouldn't so there's no point pretending that it would have. i hope that makes sense lol... it makes sense to me :)

I also love this song... what a beautiful dreamy melody :)

i absolutely love this song. it is so beautiful and mystical. the music video for it is also great and sort of dreamy too. it makes me think of dreams and how maybe these two people had dreams for each other but it just couldn't work out for some reason...

heh, well. i seem to see it as jumping out of a building. to your death, you know... and when i realised this i imagined myself falling, and the way this song sounds (dreamy and all that) seems like it would be how i would feel falling... all slowed down and dreamy, feeling like the wind was going right through me. which is how the songs sounds to me... also sounds almost like a song they'd play when a miracle happens... like in movies when you hear the "ahhhh" thing. i guess maybe being relieved of not having to live much longer.

but i don't know. it could very well have multiple meanings.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
