In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
He was so clean,
Yeah, he was so clean,
Bathed himself in bleach until he was completely soaking,
His hands were sore,
Oh yeah, they were so sore,
He scrubbed so hard he wiped the tiles off the floor,
His mop, was fancy,
Oh yeah, it was so fancy,
You should have seen the way he cleaned it all when he was dancing
N-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47, baby, n-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47,
N-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47, baby, n-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47
Perfectly clean, he was a well-oiled machine,
There was never a wrench thrown into the gears
Pant legs creased,
Never know, dirt on the barrel,
Increase the burn of fire 'til his body's clean and sterile,
Fingernails trimmed,
He is completely primmed and preep(?),
Wears the rubber gloves and he is careful what he eats,
There's plastic on the furniture,
By nature, he's a skeptic,
Unsure about the air outside so he seals of all the exits,
Lysol's life-long member,
He's always been so clean,
His food is specially packaged, sealed, and quarantined
N-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47, baby, n-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47,
N-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47, baby, n-e-a-t-f-r-e-a-k47,

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran sings about missing his former partner and learning important life lessons in the process on “Punchline.” This track tells a story of battling to get rid of emotions for a former lover, whom he now realized might not have loved him the same way. He’s now caught between accepting that fact and learning life lessons from it and going back to beg her for another chance.
I love it, I also think it's weird how the last part ends with, "A-K47 baby." you know, like the gun? Just a thought...
I noticed that as well [:
So I agree with the post below this one.
I think it may be about an assasin "He was so clean, Yeah, he was so clean, Bathed himself in bleach until he was completely soaking,"
he was very careful and a "neatfreak" so no one found any evidence
"His hands were sore, Oh yeah, they were so sore, He scrubbed so hard he wiped the tiles off the floor,"
something meaningful here, i don't really know what though.
"His mop, was fancy, Oh yeah, it was so fancy,"
nice gun
"You should have seen the way he cleaned it all when he was dancing"
was so graceful in the murder it looked like dancing
Pant legs creased, Never know, dirt on the barrel, Increase the burn of fire 'til his body's clean and sterile,
burn the body?
Fingernails trimmed,
less chance of leaving them behind
He is completely primmed and preep(?),
ready
Wears the rubber gloves and he is careful what he eats, see other food reference below
There's plastic on the furniture, easy to remove blood splatters etc.
By nature, he's a skeptic, Unsure about the air outside so he seals of all the exits, difficult escape for the victim
Lysol's life-long member, if you ad Lysol's (A) life long member -- lysol kills germs
He's always been so clean, His food is specially packaged, sealed, and quarantined could either be taken as "dont touch my food!" or "i'm careful with the bodies."
Ha! Nice interpretation, I would never have thought of that. Puts a new perspective on the song.
the "he wiped the titles off the floor part" i think we wiped up a blood spill
and i thought the same thing like an assasin or murder
just to sum up everything him being a neatfreak is a cover up and provides reasons for certain things (blocking the exits etc) to shadow his real business
Never know, dirt on the barrel,
should probably be never no dirt on the barrel
also, this song, although pointless, is insanely catchy. i can't stop listening to it.
I agree with tigerlilyfire. The first time I heard this song, it just reminded me of my own compulsive ways lol. But then I realized the whole AK-47 bit and really listened to the lyrics. This song is definitely about murder. Kinda cool(:
this reminds me of my life..
just kidding :]
It could be about someone who has obsessive compulsive disorder also?
lol yet another song that spells something it made me laugh because how serious he sounds.
cleaning is serious business
serious cleaning? love it!
if this song were any more awesome, the world would implode
