This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"
i watched as you rushed out the door and into the rain
leaving crappy conversation lacking comfort there
and fearin you'd succumb to beef and be swept away
i found the way your footsteps
trailed in your wake
do you know
that you're not alone
you fell into my arms and cried out
in between sobs you said
why did this have to happen and why couldn't it be stopped
and staring through the darkness and into your face i said my dear there is some things noone can change
o did you know
that you're not alone
please tell me you know
that you're not alone
oh when everything
around you begins to tumble down
and the world starts tastin sour
as surely its bound to
i know it isn't
easy but dont you give up on me always remember this
cuz it's the only thing that matters at all
oh at all
and no one said it's easy
letting go
except when we're hoping that it might change a thing into a memory
say i'm not stronger enough it's alright but i don't think i can take this much more
i said i've been the same way
it's alright just stay in my arms and
tell me you know
that you're not alone
just tell me you know
that you're not alone
oh when everything
around you begins to tumble down
and the world starts tastin sour
as surely it's bound to
i know it isn't easy
but don't you give up on me always remember this
cuz its the only thing that matters at all
that you hold on
that you hold on
that you hold on
well just hold your breath and look out the window
know the clouds won't be forever
seasons always change eventually
we'll learn that
tortured thoughts came out like a banshee they drain
you hope they tear at you better
think of what i said and promise me
that you'll hold on
that you'll hold on
that you'll hold on
that you'll hold on
and we'll just breathe again with eyes out the window
watch the clouds start to dissolve all over the place
and grieve for the thousand memories
oh and feel it comin back again
forcing all the wounds to mend
and bashing all the holes punched in your life
and making it alright
oh when everything
around you begins to tumble down
and the world starts tastin sour
as surely its bound to
i know it isn't easy
but dont you give up on me and
always remember that you are not alone
always know that you are not alone
ooh

Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
