Great song.. The lyrics are incredibly cryptic, I'll try my best.
It seems that it's about a break-up where both people needed each other and relied on each other. It was brought on by "one moment of doubt". Or.. it could be about two siblings separated..
Last two lines are actually:
We saw a mother cry And left a space here
Which kinda supports what wishafur said, which is interesting because I feel there's a concept to the album about a family breaking up due to the infidelity of one of the parents, ending with the mother dying either from sickness or suicide.
the mother/woman meets the man who left him years before. from the point of view from the children. The woman lived all of the years in seclusion of guilt for what she did to the man, the father, and still runs towards death, and away from life.
So...this is what I think based on what I read on Burden song discussion. It's about mother of a child (Mikaels old friend), probably two years old male child. She committed a suicide. It;s all about that. Read lyrics, it says all, it is all clear when you read it with that in mind.
Hey bloodytea, iv been following your comments through the songs, if your right about the theme of the album then most of the songs fit with the theme of a breakup or separation leading to the ultimate destruction of the whole family, however in this song i think it returns to the origional act which caused the separation because in the song before it looks like the mother has died. there is only a brief mention of demons inside which ( if this was the beginning of the separation ) would grow with time. also the bit about 2 years seams too short a period for the rest of the album to have covered if the theme runs through the album
yeah, i could definitely feel that this song is in the past. and yeah, i definitely feel that that's the major theme. thanks for checking out my theory. the demons inside was a bit confusing, i was considering it was maybe just the reference to the alcohol.
This is Freakin' hard .. i Luv Opeth but why Mikael doesnt make a simple Song which people can easily understand. i mean wht's the point of listening to 'em if we dont understand the point that they wanna convey
Why write simple songs when you're a genius? The complexity of the music and lyrics make Opeth who they are.

It's what I consider good songwriting when the meaning of a song is not obvious, but you have to search for it. A deeper meaning that is not easy to understand due to metaphors and poetic writing.

It's what gives you that ominous feeling that there's more to the song.. that grows into a subconscious feeling of understanding more than you think you do. As if it's at the tip of your tongue, but you just can't reach it. And while figuring out bits and pieces of the song, it gets better and better. And even when you figured it...

Cryptic songwriting allows for multiple interpretations, depending on the person. Meaning many more people can relate to it, all seeing a different story. It is a skill to create something that means something else to every person that reads/hears it. It is a much harder than simply telling a story.
I love cryptic songwriting, it's one of the reasons I love bands as Opeth and Katatonia so much.
All songs mean what you NEED them to mean.

mikael just uses metaphors so the lyrics and the subject of the song will be more interesting, so this way the lyrics won;t be boring and simple. so i think you should listen to the song and try to see what's hidden behind the words. cause mikael don't want you to understand the subject he just want you to feel somehow the way he felt when he wrote the song so you don't have to hit the target you just need to connect the words to your daylife and somehow you'll be sharing the same feeling with mikael.
Yet again, about the mother/woman which he seperated with, but this time, it looks like its from her point of view.
"Two years In your heart One moment of doubt
Two lives Torn apart One second from now "
- This, I believe means that they were together two years, and because of "that" little incident, they broke up, just like that.
"Held him In your arms Your fever subside Always safe from harm Kept demons inside"
- When she was with him she felt safe, but always hid her "dark" side.
"Still you always start runnin' Towards the light From the moon We saw a mother cry And left a space here"
- Hard to interpret but last two lines indicate her sorrow over having to leave her children.
I'm starting to believe that the lyrics are about Jesus and his Mother (Mary). Perhaps not though. Just a hankering.
