thought you were the sweetest kid
did you even know?
and all the time you thought you did
was it just the girl (?)

we could try to wear you out
did you even show?
thought you were the sweetest kid
could i even know?

i held your hand into the light(?)
the scars were on the back
and all the time we were the right(?)
they try to make retract

and they can try to wear you out
put you down
leave you through the ideas of the lie

i thought you were the sweetest kid
could you even know?

all the time we get by
trying to figure out our lives
like a fade out

when you took the land-o-town (??)
were you just a twelve?
and all the time you built the lips
was it just for show?

and they can try to put you down
wear you out
get you through the pills that won't work

i thought you were the sweetest kid
did i even know?

all the time we get by
try to figure out our lives
like a fade out

Very ambiguous, as usual. The song is absolutely amazing. Hopefully this and all the others will be formally released at some point.

I feel like it's to a kid that they possibly made fun of back in the day, but in reality they thought he was "the sweetest kid". The kid never showed how much it affected him, and eventually he landed in a mental hospital where he was put on the "pills that won't work". He feels bad about treating the kid this way, and this is sort of his apology.

All the time we get by trying to figure out or lives like a fade out...........

i'm thinking it probably has to do more with his or the person in the song's drug problems... than a kid in a mental hospital.

This is Broken Social Scene's Sweetest Kill...

I thought you were the sweetest kill Did I even know? And all the time we thought we did Was it just for show?

If they try to pull you out Would you even go? I thought you were the sweetest kill Did you even know?

I held your hand until the light The scars were on the back And all the time we were the right Was it just retract?

And they can try to put you down, wear you out Get you through the idea of the luck

I thought you were the sweetest kill Did we even know?

All the time, we get by, trying to figure out our lives Like a fade out All the time, we get by, trying to figure our lives Like a fade out

When we took the level ten Was it just a twelve? And when we went to where we've been Was it just for self?

And they can try to wear you down, put you out Get you through your will, that won't work

I thought you were the sweetest kill Could I even know?

All the time, we get by, trying to figure out our lives Like a fade out All the time, we get by, trying to figure our lives Like a fade out All the time, we get by, trying to figure out our lives Like a fade out All the time, we get by, trying to figure our lives Like a fade out

I break you through this world I break you through this world Let me break you through this world Can I break you through this world?

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

When We Were Young
Blink-182
This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
