I was backed into a corner,
And my hands were tied from two…
So I threw my hands into the air,
And I did what I had to do…
There were marks all over her body,
And she never speaks with her friends…
And we stopped showing up on Sundays,
And we will never go back again…

Lord, I’m not ready to have a baby,
So I give him back to you…
And I’ll take him back when I’m ready,
If you can ever forgive what I did…

If you could ever forgive what I did…

When will we be happy?
Where will we find strength?
Can we face our families?
When will you be safe?

Be safe…

I actually asked the band about this song and this is what they told me.

"As for Aboriri, it's the story of a couple facing the decision of having an abortion or not. We try to write our music from personal experiences, even though some (like aboriri) aren't necessarily "true" stories, they do come from true experiences."

How does "there were marks all over her body" have to do with emotional pain...? I was just wondering, because this line and the next, "and she never speaks with her friends" leans me toward believing that it's got a rape scene involved, but then again, why is HE talking about it, if it's really rape and abortion? It just didn't make sense to me... care to explain?

    My Interpretation

I know i am a few years late for this convo, but .. there are 2 different scenarios for this. 1) it IS about the choice of a couple as stated above, and the song was poorly written... or 2) it is definitely about a pregnancy rape (wonderfully accurately written) and this topic is too hot for the band to come out and stand behind. Not the the band is broken up, we may never know. But for a starving band to come out and defend women's rights like this would be political suicide in most cases. Backed into a corner, hands tied, marked body, feeling gods betrayal and not returning to church, Finding Happiness, Strength, what will my family think?, and most importantly... when will i feel safe?... wether it was written to be a rape/abort song, it defiantly is painted in that color. Either way, i am probably making a video/animation to this track, going with the rape train of thought. Ill post a link when completed.

This song is clearly about abortion.
The title "Aboriri" means abortion, from Latin "to perish".
"Backed into a corner" could refer to the feeling of having to make a decision of birthing the child or having an abortion.
"Marks all over her body" could refer to the operation [physically and emotionally].
"She never speaks with her friends" refers to the fact that she won't even discuss her abortion with her friends.
The lyrics tell how they stopped going to church, possibly shunned, if the abortion was known about or just felt dirty? The rest [all of the song] is pretty explanatory. Amazing song. Absolutely amazing.

True. I had not thought of that. Sad song, but so amazing.

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
