does anyone in here get hit
with inside fever?
so bad sometimes it's hard
to move around
they'll show you all the things
you are not doing
instead of helping you they'll
lock you out
and you're whining you shouldn't waste your money
but the couch fibers keep you inside
so i'm so sorry I came in
late this evening
but all the clocks around
the town had died
and all the fruit store's colors
were so bright
with couples smiling
cooking things tonight
and what were all those
troubles on my mind
oh I took a walk
The room is filled with men and coke
And I don't break 'til midnight shock
Are you feeling warm tonight?
Turn it down? Well, I just might
The room is filled with ancient apes
Where I've been and what I ate
What I asked you drill them out
And ... every little doubt
The room is filled with gummy bears
Electric shavers, ingrown hairs
I keep the curtains high enough
You sleep on cotton, rest in fluff
The room is filled with catalogues
Encyclopaedias, books enough
To keep me busy in the morning
Sun sets fast without warning
The room is filled with cords and plugs
Electronic translucent bugs
And what's that crawling all around?
What's that twitching, is it still alive!?
Is it still alive!?
Is it still alive!?
does anyone in here get hit

yes I took a walk
oh i like a walk
with inside fever?
so bad sometimes it's hard

"Inside fever" is referring to inertia and self doubt brought on by depression, creative block, or just being bored and having cabin fever.
The singer describes that he has no energy to move, and can only see what he should be doing, but can't stop procrastinating.
This "fever" has given him a creative block.
He says to himself that he should not waste the morning, but he can't get off of the couch.
Later (after the episode has passed) he apologizes to his partner for coming in late, and describes street scenes tinted with an expansive high, like the "up" phase of a bipolar cycle.
He became oblivious to time. The fruit in sidewalk stalls took on a psychedelic quality. He ascribes happiness to the couples he saw, and imagines their happy home lives.
He has forgotten his worries by taking this walk, but also suggests that he has experienced a manic episode and is referencing a stifled home and creative life.
The second part is a melancholy description of his domestic scene during one of these episodes. It is lyrically and emotionally jumbled, simulating his thoughts and emotions during one of these bouts with inside fever.
listen to the second part, or what maybe should be called the verse since they just repeat the first part after it. right after 'is it still alive' a distorted voice comes in and sings the first bit of the second part, you cant make out the words but read along and listen to them hit the notes. then right as the first very distorted voice says 'the room is filled with gummy bears' the next distorted voice says 'the room is filled with men and coke' and starts the second part of the song. all the while, a normal voice can slightly be heard in the background making out the real lyrics. as the first voice finishes out the second part of the song, the second distorted voice matches it perfectly all along. they use their voice as instruments, its genius, doesnt matter what they say.
with this EP, Animal Collective have become the best band ever.
It kind of just reminds me of a winter, when seasonal depression sets in and you just don't want to do anything. you don't want to get up, you feel feverish with hopelessness.
and no, im not basing this whole lack of motivation on JUST "but the couch fibers kept you inside.."
aside from the meaning- this song has just elevated from what I thought animal collective was capable of. the burst in the middle of the song is so emotionally intense, if you don't feel anything from it than you are an idiot.
What's that twitching, is it still alive!?
Is it still alive!?
Is it still alive!?"
to me this is the most powerful part because it is about this lack of motivation you see in yourself from "inside fever". Or, get the fuck outside learn a few things and most imprtantly yourself. look at you "crawling" around in your shitty apartment, eating and watching adam sandler movies while holding many regrets in your heart. Are you still alive?? or just neutral...ARE YOU STILL ALIIIIVEEVEVEVEVEVEVEV????????
