On A Tuesday in Amsterdam Long Ago Lyrics

A picture of Amsterdam
Bare trees under glass
Framed in the grey and white afternoon light
Of a winter long passed
When I was a riser
To Dublin I'd roam
She was a bareback rider
Some miles from home

Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me

She’s a carnival diver
Hung in the sky
Cutting through time like a memory
Strung on a wire
The color of anything
Fades in the air
She is the film of a book of the story
Of the smell of her hair

Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me

When everything’s over
And everything’s clear
When everyone’s older
No one is here
I try to remember
A girl on a wire
Tumbling and diving above Steven’s Green
Like a kite in the air

Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Oh come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me
Come back to me

"When we were traveling in Europe a few years ago, I was looking out the window and I was thinking what if all the stuff I'm feeling right now was just something I'm looking back at years from now, like a snapshot taken out of this window... what if it was just a picture? like the picture in Hard Candy that I kept in a draw, a post-card of this moment, and what if things hadn't had turned out as well as I hoped? So this is a photograph, of a moment in my life a long time ago - it's basically the same song as Accidentally In Love, just looked at from a distance"

Such a beautiful song. I'm a fan of Raining in Baltimore, and when I first heard this I fell in love with it.

It's a pretty simple song... I think when he has nobody to focus on he goes back to thinking and wanting to the same person.

Very powerful at:

When everything’s over And everything’s clear When everyone’s older No one is here I try to remember A girl on a wire Tumbling and diving above Steven’s Green Like a kite in the air

Sums up the whole song I believe.

Its always his simplest songs that are the best. Those with just a piano and his genius.

This is a really great song but it makes me nervous when I listen to it. Adam sounds different in this song, almost older... can't really describe it and it makes me think how long it's been since August and Everything After.

This song makes me depressed. It reminds me of Raining in Baltimore quite a lot, both are great songs.

i think the meaning or meanings of this song in my opinion could be trying to remember a certain time of pure happiness and having a beautiful memory that you lost at the hands of time.. that you try to remember, and you want it to come back, & when you have nothing at least you can have your memories that mean everything to you since time ate them up.

It looks to me like this song was written about Gemma Hayes. It is very similar to Hazy, which he co-wrote with her, and when he sang it in Amsterdam in 2003 (a week after she had left the tour), he later said that he sang it there because he couldn't stop thinking about her. In that song he says:

"Could you tell me why you're leaving Cause I don't know why it has to be so."

and in this one he keeps crying out "Come back to me."

Also, he met Gemma in Dublin, and was born in Ireland. "When I was a riser, to Dublin I'd roam. She was a bare-backed rider, some miles from home." He also mentions Steven's Greens which is a place in Ireland. So it seems that the girl in this song is related to Ireland somehow, and so it wouldn't surprise me if the song is about her. I can also mention that Adam once said that this song and Accidentally in Love was about the same girl. So, it's also possible that that song is about Gemma too. I could be wrong about all of this, but it all seems to fit. Great song anyway!
