"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Hello
You're hoping
Tomorrow's never sewn
But you're singing the only words you know
Would you cry
If I lied, told a tale
I chose ya
You're ringing the only wedding bell
And we're swimming the seas we know
So well I tried to stay alive
In our beds, in our heads
Oh, but your wish is my command
Oh, is your heart still mine to sail?
I've met yours, now meet mine
I chose ya
You're ringing the only wedding bell
And we're swimming the seas we know so well
I tried to stay alive
In our beds, in our heads
Oh, but your wish is my command
You're hoping
Tomorrow's never sewn
But you're singing the only words you know
Would you cry
If I lied, told a tale
I chose ya
You're ringing the only wedding bell
And we're swimming the seas we know
So well I tried to stay alive
In our beds, in our heads
Oh, but your wish is my command
Oh, is your heart still mine to sail?
I've met yours, now meet mine
I chose ya
You're ringing the only wedding bell
And we're swimming the seas we know so well
I tried to stay alive
In our beds, in our heads
Oh, but your wish is my command

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
I think this song is about a couple that has been together for a long time, in which one of them wants to get married, and the other one agrees without really wanting it deep inside, or feeling deeply insecure about his/her feelings, but agrees due to the safeness, comfort, certainty and fear of hurting the other person.
Happens a lot.
A beautiful sad song
"Oh; Is you're heart still mine to sail?"
That's what I hear and I like it.
i agree.

i chose, yeah you're ringing the only wedding bell and we're swimming the seas we know so well i tried to stay alive in our bed, in our head
oh, but your wish is my command

"Humming you're humming tomorrow's nursery rhyme"
*I hear: "Hopppp ... you're hoping tomorrow's never (?)"
"I tried to stay in line in our deaths in our heads"
*I hear: "I try to stay alive, in our bed, in our head."
"Oh, is your heart still mine for sale?"
*I hear: Oh, is your heart still mine to save?
(maybe I just like that better).
I apologize if these are the official lyrics, my ears have deceived me before. If so, I'm sure someone will clarify. Thanks for putting this up.
I'm addicted to this song. Especially that funky little melody after "Is your heart still mine ..." I've had that in my head all day.

Brilliant song, brilliant artists, can't wait to see them live :)
Zoolah:
After 'I enjoy' do you think it may be 'I enjoy nothing more'? It is really hard to determine because that part is sung so high, but I thought it sounded like that
Oh, is your heart still mine to assail?
This fits the best.
One of your favorite bands and a wedding song. I don't suggest it for an official ceremony, although the one I selected for my wedding awhile back was not conventional either (which may be why the singers changed it w/o telling us:( Here's to all the happy people who love marriage. More power to them 'cause it's not for me.
This couple obviously has been together and perhaps lived together for quite some time. They get married and one of them realizes it was just because of comfort and complacency. The marriage is repetitive lacking zeal hence swimming the seas we know so well. The person has this revelation yet stays because of possibly not wanting to lose the comfort or hurting the individual - Is your heart still mine to save?
