Wicked Man's Rest Lyrics

You can say I'm mad, you can say I'm crazy,
But I'm only as bad as the maker who made me:
Sinner in the darkness, liar in the church,
Deaf man's silence, the blind man's search.

Teardrop falling, memory recalling,
Ghost in your dreams & your secret recordings,
Mad man's matches, the lump in the throat,
The pea under your mattress, the hole in your coat.

Singer with the sound down, winner on the come down,
Poet in the overcoat looking for a suntan,
On his birthday, prisoner on his first day,
Tired of the new wave.

I rise to meet you as your trust dissolves to shame,
Oh this innocence has turned & lost its way,
Retrace the footprints off the path from which I came,
I'm the beast in you, the beast in me.

Which way are we going?
The doors close in an hour.

You can say I'm mad, you can say I'm crazy
But I'm only as bad as the maker who made me:
Needle for the user, the pain in your chest,
Beggar & the chooser, the wicked man's rest.

Fear in the stuntman, sneer in the playground,
Bottle in the hand of the dirty old drunk man,
Leaf falling, autumn calling,
dark clouds forming.

I rise to meet you as your trust dissolves to shame,
Oh this innocence has turned & lost its way,
Retrace the footprints off the path from which I came,
I'm the beast in you, the beast in me.

Bite my nails right down to the skin,
Where one trust ends another lie begins.
Patch over holes in my weakened heart,
Which angels hold & devils pull apart.
I'm the beast in you, the beast in me,
The bitterness, the jealousy,
The part of you that never sleeps.

Are you my angel?
Will we walk all night through solitary streets?

And you hardly can imagine what you never had before,
And the reason that you're given still leaves you wanting more.
And you hardly can imagine what you never had before,
And the reason that you're given still leaves you wanting more.

I rise to meet you as your trust dissolves to shame,
Oh this innocence has turned & lost its way,
Retrace the footprints off the path from which I came,
I'm the beast in you, the beast in me,
the bitterness, the jealousy,
the part of you that never sleeps...

"Sinner in the darkness, Liar in the church, Deaf man's silence, The blind man's search Teardrop falling, Memory recalling, Ghost in your dreams, And your secret recordings"

He's plagued by his own darkside.

"Singer with the sound down, winner on the come down, poet in the overcoat looking for a suntan"

charismatic and social but only in a dark way.

"I rise to meet you, As your trust dissolves to shame"

hes at his strongest when his friends are down.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Wicked Man's Rest lyrics by Passenger

"You can say I'm mad You can say I'm crazy But I'm only as bad As the maker who made me"

He has done things he isn't proud of but denies credit, saying the curicumstances forced him.

"Sinner in the darkness Liar in the church Deaf man's silence The blind man's search

Teardrop falling Memory recalling Ghost in your dreams And your secret recordings

Mad man's matches Lump in your throat The pea under your mattress The hole in your coat

Singer with the sound down Winner on the come down Poet in the overcoat Looking for a suntan

On his birthday Prisoner on his first day...

Needle for the user The pain in your chest Beggar and the chooser The wicked man's rest

Fear in the stuntman Sneer in the playground Bottle in the hand Of a dirty old drunk man

Leaf falling Autumn calling Dark clouds forming"

He's listing things that shouldn't be, and are seen as wrong, confusing, sad, or all of the above, but are, and happen very often.

"I rise to meet you As your trust dissolves to shame Oh, this innocence has turned and lost its way Retrace the footprints Off the path from which I came I'm the beast in you, the beast in me"

He is trying to become a better person and rising to meet a new standard by retracing his steps to see where he went wrong and accepting his flaws. He then wonders if this new role-model of sorts is his angel, and where s/he will lead him.

"Bite my nails Right down to the skin Where one trust ends And another lie begins."

Old habits die hard, and the cycle keeps going.

"Patch over holes In my weakened heart Which angels hold And devils pull apart."

He's doing his best to be a better him, but his heart is extremely conflicted when it comes to certain situations, making him feel as if he's being torn in two.

"I'm the beast in you The beast in me The bitterness, the jealousy The part of you that never sleeps"

He realizes that even his 'angel' his corrupted, and in the second to last stanza he sees how his angel is succumbing to the urge to be bitter, jealous, etc. and finding it addictive and near impossible to stop. Bad influence?

In the last stanza, I think the roles are now reversed.

My Interpretation

This reminds me of Destiel if you don't know, it's the relationship between Dean Winchester and Castiel from Supernatural

"You can say I'm mad You can say I'm crazy But I'm only as bad As the maker who made me"

That reminds me of Dean, of how his faith of God is shaky

" Singer with the sound down Winner on the come down Poet in the overcoat Looking for a suntan

On his birthday Prisoner on his first day Tired of the new wave"

This reminds me of cas, he overcoat is is beloved trench-coat He sins against heaven when he goes tells the Winchesters things that heaven doesn't want them to know He was poetic in the episode The Man Who Would Be King

He was always doing wht was told since he was created, since he is an angel and angel were supposed to follow orders But he learns of free will and rebels against heaven.

"I rise to meet you As your trust dissolves to shame Oh, this innocence has turned and lost its way Retrace the footprints Off the path from which I came I'm the beast in you, the beast in me"

Castiel raised Dean out of Hell. He lied to him to protect him Castiel was obedient in the past, and he learns of porn and other things and changes more human than angel He brings out the anger in Dean when he's being attacked, and vice versa. If anyone hurt Dean, or tries to, Cas gets them.

"(Which way are we going? The doors close in an hour)"

This is like when they were in purgatory. Castiel ended up pushing dean away and sacrificing himself so dean could get out safe.

"Fear in the stuntman Sneer in the playground Bottle in the hand Of a dirty old drunk man"

They were in a playground, one of the more intimate scenes between them, when they saved a whole town. Dean is a heavy drinker, drinking one beer after another, all day.

"Patch over holes In my weakened heart Which angels hold And devils pull apart'

I'm the beast in you The beast in me The bitterness, the jealousy The part of you that never sleeps"

This part kinda explains itself for them

"(Are you my angel? Will we walk all night through solitary streets?)

And you hardly can imagine What you never had before And the reason that you're given Still leaves you wanting more"

Cas is his guardian angel, assigned from heaven to watch dean.
He never had freedom before, and he ends up fighting for it. He Killed many of his siblings, and making sure the winchesters were safe.

Thats just my thought though

My Opinion

@hahawht : when I first heard this song, that is all I could think of!

Welcome to the fight inside. This is in all of us. This is the whispers and screams reaching forward from the shadows of our mind. It is the lies we tell ourselves to make life bearable, and all the dirty things we do hoping to feel better. It is also the part that forces us to give these things up and to strive to be better.
