It feels right
It feels wrong
It feels like when you have it, then it's gone
I want more
More and more
And if you steal the fire
Give me some
'Cause the sun
Disobeys while it waits for a friend to arrive from the past
What holds us around, and around
While we wait

i think this song is written from the eyes of the whole world, and life on it in general (also why the song is too short). the sun disobeying, is saying it will do as it will, without regards. and the friend we wait for is, well, up to you. could be the sun waiting for someone to shine on, could be Jesus, could be your true love. i like how it's vague enough for interpretation.

Every album of Jack Johnsons has a short song that seems to make little sense to me. I cannot even start to figure this one out... I can't even stand to listen to it... not because it's a bad song, but because I don't understand it. Kevinhansen... your interpretation is the best I've heard, but the only I've heard. Thanks for your help!

Well, to me this song is about my situation. Just got things going with this girl but she had just gotten out of a 4-5 year relationship. This have been really good for the first 2-3 weeks but we just had a talk cause she isn't ready to get back in a relationship. So to me the song is about getting a glimpse of something so right, but having it taken from you. "feels like when you have it, then it's gone". and so right now im just waiting for a friend to arrive from the past. hoping that there is still some sun left (our feelings for eachother) when she finally does arrive. I don't know, this song seemed pretty straight forward to me, mostly cause of my situation.

Mmm... I think it's more about the fact that human nature drives us to always 'want more.' Whatever our goals, we reach them and always see something better, we can never be satisifed...I think the song is about our feelings while we do that- how desperate we are, and lost. The second we have something, it isn't enough, and we have to start aiming for something else. It refers to the feelings at the moment when we realize that we're reckless and insatiable creatures that will stop at nothing to get what we want. And when we do get what we want....all of the brightness that was once surrounding it dissapears, because it's not enough. It's talking about how we need something to redeem us- the fire (or sun) burns out while we wait for something with meaning to come along with it. But it doesn't- we can't go back to the past, and the past can't come to us. The word choice 'past' indicates that it's an endless cycle that sucks away our soul. We will never be satisfied with what we have. We will always want more. It's a sad song; human nature in its truest form. We want, we want, and we want. And when we get... it's not enough. It will never be.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
