This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
This is it, it's the key to it all,
and besides I'm so tired being sick all the time.
They said don't get a first-gen, but it's nice.
It's so nice.
And you can come push the buttons if you like,
just be gentle.
I'm still making sure all the functions are all right.
But this new heart of mine goes from zero to love in no time.
So the salesman said he got one for himself,
a charmed life with some kids and some stainless steal knives.
Paid in full as of 2029,
I'll need to scrape all my change and give up all my toys
but, really, who needs more than this thing?
and besides I'm so tired being sick all the time.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

no comments?! this is my FAVORITE shtym song. I love the way his voice sounds when he says "this new heat of mine". Basically, he falls really fast, and it's nice? I think. I like to think that, anyways.
I can tell you exactly what this song means, It's about having a completely broken heart that can't love anymore and getting a brand new heart that can love again and that you can share. It might take forever to get and everything to sacrfice, But, It's worth it to love again.
i love this song! the best bit has gotta be when he starts mumbling about kids and stainless steel knives ^-^ heehee,it never fails to make me smile :]
this was amazing live, probably one of his best live. :]
I love the part where he talks about being sick all the time, ahha. I just like how it sounds.
I think this song is PARTLY about meeting someone, and falling for them quickly for various reasons that even you may not know.
but I just reread the lyrics.. and he's talking about something.. but he doesn't say what. Whatever it is, it's the key to it all.
Haha,.yeahhh
I was thinking about the meaning of this song while taking a test, and.. I think about it's him getting a new heart, heart implant maybe?
"Paid in full as of 2029, I'll need to scrape all my change and give up all my toys but, really, who needs more than this thing?"
And then of course, "This new heart of mine".

I think what he is talking about is, in a sarcastic way, how he easily, too easily, falls in love with women. "Zero to love" seems to be saying it's been "love at first sight".
It sounds like It is about him falling in love with the 1st generation iPhone and how he has never experienced loving something, someone quickly and deeply...so, it may only be attributed to having a new found heart...but it will take him till the year 2029 to pay it off.
