"Footprints In The Sand" as written by Per Olof Magnusson, Richard J. Page, David Bengt Kreuger and Simon Philip Cowell....
You walked with me,
Footprints in the sand,
And helped me understand,
Where I'm going

You walked with me,
When I was all alone,
With so much unknown,
Along the way,
Then I heard you say

I promise you,
I'm always there,
When your heart is filled with sorrow,
And despair, I'll carry you
When you need a friend
You'll find my footprints in the sand.

I see my life flash across the sky,
So many times have I been so afraid.
And just when I, have thought I lost my way,
You gave me strength to carry on,
It's then I heard you say

I promise you
I'm always there
When your heart is filled
With sorrow and despair
And, I'll carry you
When you need a friend
You'll find my footprints in the sand.

When I'm with you,
Well I know you've been there,
And I can feel you when you say

I promise you (you)
I'm always there
When your heart is filled (when your heart)
With sadness and despair (and despair)
I'll carry you when you need a friend (need a friend)
You'll find my footprints in the sand. (I promise you)

Oh. (I'm always there)

When your heart is full of
Sadness and despair, (and despair)
I'll carry you when you need a friend. (I'll carry you)
You'll find my footprints in the sand.

Leona Lewis (choir)

Song MeaningWell... like many, many songs - it could be interpreted in many different ways. God, a friend, long-time partner, this song speaks to many people, all at the same time.
Personally, I don't believe in god, I believe there is something greater then us, but I don't believe it's god.
Whether or not Simon based this song on the poem, is his choice, but the lyrics reach out to many who need/want/ already have had the help to go through the hard times.
"I'll carry you, when you need a friend" - The song, would make for an incredible wedding song.

General CommentIt seems like this song was written about this poem. I think this is one of the most powerful songs on the album. It's one of my favorites because it reminds that God is always there.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there were one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, "You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?" The Lord replied, "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand, is when I carried you." --Mary Stevenson
